I enjoy the Alpenhof in Frederick (on Market St. I believe). It doesn't really have the atmosphere you're looking for, but the food is excellent. Mind you, Frederick is a bit of a drive...

Some time, if you're feeling adventurous, head out to the Oldenberg Brewery in Covington, Kentucky (just below Cincinatti) -- huge beer hall with great food and beer!

Michelle...here are three in the DC area I've been to and enjoyed. Hope this helps...SteveO

Little Europe - German
2434 Wisconsin Ave NW Georgetown. Very interesting German food with a wide selection of German biers including Weissen. During spring they have a very good Spargel Festival with about a half dozen or more dishes.

Cafe Mozart - German Deli
H Street Washington DC. Good German Food.

Helga's International Cafe
6710 Old Dominion Rd McLean VA. A good selection of continental food from France, Germany and Switzerland. A little pricey but not too bad. Good food.

You may also want to check out the Wurtzburg Haus in Rockville. It is fequently mentioned in the "best 100" lists of the Washintonian magazine. Nice big 1L beer mugs and plenty of excellent wurst.

I'll end the note here without making any puns :-)

Haussner's is definitely still open. Unlike the old days, though, they now accept credit cards. :-)
