Best place I know is Evans' Crab house on St. George's Island in southern Maryland. It's a long but enjoyable drive from Alexandria.

Cap'n Pells on Route 29 in Merrifield looks like a hole, but it has a great reputation!

I've had crabs from Cap'n Pells twice. The first time was many years ago - probably around 1989. The next time was Mother's Day, 1996. Both times they were *lousy*. I know lots of people eat there, but I was NOT impressed with their crabs.

The place that we go to, and I've posted this before, is Cantler's right outside of Annapolis. It is not "all you can eat" (I don't think places that serve "all you can eat" are getting the best food possible) but every time I eat there, the crabs get even better, if possible. We're going this Sunday, in fact, for my husband's b-day. It's a long, low building, very cozy, with a bar and long tables inside, and tables outside on a partially covered deck that sits on the Severn River. Very cozy, nice atmosphere, great food, and wonderful crabs. I highly recommend it! (and yes, I realize it's not local, but in the summertime who cares if you drive to Annapolis - it makes a really fun trip/evening)

Oh man, how could I forget or hang-out? The Quaterdeck is the one near Ft. Myer. We spent *many* a happy-hour there after work, and sometimes went for crabs. You have to wait sometimes over an hour (or two) to sit outside in the good weather, and the crabs were always very expensive there, but they were good and it's a fun place to drink beer and party (our bill was always much smaller than we expected so we always thought the waitresses lost count of how many pitchers we drank).
