Here are a few recent and two memorable....Let me know who has been to these and what you think: This may have already come up, but I recently visited the Wellsboro Diner in Wellsboro, PA. This was my first time there and I thought it was excellent. And Kate, they made their own pie and it really was quite good (peanut butter). The place is really a unique place. Sort of like an old train car. They cook the food right behind the counter. I think they have added a adjacent dining room, but I couldn't tell. I had meatloaf, yummy. Le Galaxie Diner is located in Montreal, I atethere while on vacation in August. It is what you think of when a diner comes to mind. Chrome front and big long counter. My kids loved it - especially the juke box selector at every table. Food was just good, ambiance was great. Also on vacation we stopped (and stayed) at Moody's Diner and Motel. It's located in Waldoboro, Maine (We made a huge loop on vacation from Pgh, to Toronto to Montreal to Quebec City, to Bar Harbor, to Cape Cod to Pgh...But again, I digress....) Moody's looks sort of like a ship from the outside. The food was great! Large helpings, hot, fresh, delicious. I had a lobster roll, lobster bisque, lobster, a lobster ommelette and all was lobster-dilly-icious! I would have had a lobster milkshake, but alas that was not on the menu. The Blue Water Diner - Bainbridge Island, WA. Last year I had some time to kill before I got on the ferry, so I happened upon this place. The place was very nice. Red and white naugahide with nice counter. I had a smoked salmon and cheese omelette, The Blue Water Special! So this one time I'm driving cross counrty....and my car breaks down in this little town in Iowa....Tom make a long story short, the guy in the tow truck tells me...."Just Look for the chicken"....I say to myself WTF??? Well, sho nuff, I look up the street and I see this HUGE pink chicken. So I follow that beak-on (get it, hehe) to Cecil's Diner. I knew it had to be classy, because the chicken had on a top hat! The chicken was sitting on the roof looking quite dapper. The food was pretty good....I had these unusually large cinnamon rolls and the coffee was exceptionally good. It's probably still there, the place was packed. I have a few more, but I'll save them for another time.......... Ken Di! Ecce hora! Uxor mea me necabit!
Maine
Speaking of Diners......

I absolutely love the Wellesboro Diner. And I love the town, it's beautiful. And I love US6. It's a beautiful drive. I love that whole area. The PA Grand Canyon is up there. It's beautiful, especially in the fall. The diner itself is quite spectacular - a classic porcelain diner. Beautiful! I've had good food at the Wellesboro Diner. I've only had lunch there, twice so far. Didn't have the pie, but I may at least think about it if I go there again. (P.S. The fact that a place makes it's own pies does not mean they will be any good, it just means that, well, they make their own pies. I know I'm always tempted by signs advertising homemade this and homemade that but I have to stop and remind myself of all the louse cooks I know who make lousy homemade stuff. When I first see the word homemade on a sign naturally my thoughts go to the wonderful foods I make at home, but then I remember that that's not what they're referring to. :-) Sometimes I get suckered in and 99% of the time I'm sorry I did. > Le Galaxie Diner is located in Montreal, I atethere while on vacation > in August. Doubt if I'll ever get to Montreal, especially because I have no great desire to go there for any reason. > Also on vacation we stopped (and stayed) at Moody's Diner and Motel. > It's located in Waldoboro, Maine (We made a huge loop on vacation > from Pgh, to Toronto to Montreal to Quebec City, to Bar Harbor, to > Cape Cod to Pgh...But again, I digress....) I was planning to stop at Moody's when I was in Maine last year, but I ended up eating a late, and lousy, breakfast on the way and so I wasn't at all hungry when I got there. And besides it isn't a real diner so I didn't feel I needed to stop there in spite of not being hungry, which I might have done for a "real" diner. > The Blue Water Diner - Bainbridge Island, WA. Did you have the chicken? > I have a few more, but I'll save them for another time.......... I'm going to VT via Boston next month and am going to try to hit as many diners on the way up and back as possible. Right now I'm mapping out my route to hit the most interesting-sounding diners. I hope to hit a couple in northern New Jersey and at least one in western Mass., 2 or more in VT, maybe one or two in NH on the way back to Boston. Going to try a Tibetan restaurant in Boston and maybe a Tapas place my friend wants to take me to. Then I'll try to hit a diner in Fall River and maybe one in RI and a couple in CT on the way back home. Kate > Ken > > Di! Ecce hora! Uxor mea me necabit! >
One should try trip to Toronto, good ethnic food and the exchange rate is extremely favorable. Wife and I spent Labor day weekend up there. Greek cuisine was on the menu this year and was great. Chinatown is fabulous also. We found a place called the Purple Pig that had really great BBQ Pork, beef and chicken. prices reasonable and beer was cold. Tim
