Depending upon what kind of place you're looking for, you might consider The Clambake at Pine Point, just north of Old Orchard Beach. It's more kind of a giant Maine seafood fast food place -- which seats several hundred people.

It's about midway between Kittery and Freeport.

The place started out as a small shack with a take-out window back in the 1960s -- and grew and grew and grew. The owner was the local barber who also worked part time lobstering. Every year he added more and more to the building. It's one of the few places in the area that stays open all winter because it does a lot of business with the locals. Not just the tourists.

The portions are huge and the quality is good (but nothing one would call gourmet.) Like a fast food place, you order at the counter and get a number. They call you when your order is ready. They also have a full bar for beer, wine and cocktails and -- I believe -- an ice cream place.

Fried seafood can be ordered in crumbs rather than batter
-- a very nice touch if you you're one of those folks who has experienced clam joints where they puff up the batter to use less fish.

Far from elegant -- just funky and fun.

And they now have a web page:

Cheers,
The Old Bear

A favorite place of mine is the Ogunquit Lobster Pound, on Route 1 just past the center of town. They have a huge lobster tank outside and a giant stone pool to cook them in. They also have some incredible steamers, among the best I've had.

Their pies are excellent as well. If they have it, get a slice of blueberry a la mode. Well worth the calories.

They don't have a website (they used to, but it hasn't worked in over a year), but there's info about them at http://dinesite.com/info/rstrnt-94161/?&t=422 .

If going up to Wells, I'd stop at Billy's Chowder House.

Great seafood, lobster rolls, fried clams and scallops, and very good onion rings.

or if you want a great view and good food, try the Lighthouse in York Beach

Federal Jack's? I concur with the recommendation.
