My favorite is Gilbert's Chowder House on Commercial Street right down by the water in Portland (Old Port area). Great chowda of course and try the steamed mussels if they have them that day. This is a classic "locals" place that is a great find for out of towners.
Maine

Great food, hearty : servings. Family run business that has been around for years. Especially : good breakfasts. Awesome grilled cheese sandwich!! I havent been up that way for 20 years or so,but I used to always make it a point to stop at Cole Farms in Gray.It apparently started out as a luncheonette but they expanded their parking lot and it became for all intents and purposes a truck stop without the gas pumps.Nonetheless, they served some impeccably fresh and simple seafood, most memorably some "baby Maine shrimp" that were as fresh and briny as any I have had to this day. There was also a drive-in place on Rt 202 (is that right?) I think right around Westport on the way to Portland, that claimed to have the "Worlds Best Hamburgers".That was an overestimation, but the burgers were well above average. Over on the West side of Southern Maine, actually in Rochester New Hampshire (technically maybe in Gonic) was another drive-in called the Clam Box.We never failed to stop at this place on the way to the Sanford area for clams and shrimp and stuff.Like the above mentioned places,it had a huge parking lot,and it was always jammed when we were there. ________________________________________________________ [email removed] "It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing" -Ray Davies
