If you are in the Brunswick/Bath area look up the Robinhood Free Meeting House. It is located just north of Bath in a place called Georgetown. Great food, extensive wine list. Also try Kristina's in Bath. In Portland it would be a mistake to miss Street and Co. This is mainly seafood, located on a charming cobblestone street. Superb fare. Those are really the only three restaurants of any repute in this northern wasteland of a state. Enjoy.

I disagree about your assessment of restaurants in Maine, and in particular in Portland--spent some time there last summer on my way to and from some business in Yarmouth, Novia Scotia, and found Portland to be filled with an inordinate amount of restaurants, especially given that it is such a small city (I'm a chef who resides in New Orleans, by the way). Chalk it up, I guess, to the presence of both the University of Southern Maine and to a very vibrant and thriving arts communinity.

That being said, I found a wonderful little place that was originally called Cafe Always, but is now Mo's on ????--can't remember the street name. But the chef is a transplanted New Yorker who does a regional cuisine with the best of what's available seasonally, and I had a fantastic meal there, and at a very reasonable price as well--field green salad with glazed pecans and goat cheese, pepita-crusted salmon with a to die for corn pudding as an entree, and a wild blueberry pudding with homemade nutmeg ice-cream and a half bottle of excellent Pinot Noir as well, and I think I was out for less than $50 for myself. Also, there is a really, really fantastic, tiny little Thai restaurant up by the Inn at St.John, on the end of Congress St. by the University--it is super cheap, and the food is all freshly prepared and EXCELLENT--among the best Asian food I've had anywhere, and that includes both New York City and California. There is also a wine bar on that end of Congress that is supposed to have an excellent French menu to accompany their wine list, but unfortunately they were closed both nights I was in town.

by all means, enjoy Portland--the seafood restaurant mentioned by the other fellow is a frequent recommendation, although from what people say it may be somewhat of a tourist trap. Good luck and enjoy!!
