Too bad you're not going to be in Rhode Island. One of the best diners ever is the Modern Diner in Pawtucket. The railroad car is the main dining room. They have added a big room on the back, but it's just another restaurant (with bar). Some of their offerings are liver and onions, beef stew, and meatloaf. And, the mashed potatoes are REAL, not powdered. The breakfasts are marvelous. And the servings huge. A few years ago, the Disney folks used a picture of the diner on a tee shirt with Mickey and Minnie standing in front. They hadn't asked for permission so the diner sued AND WON!!!

The diner is right off Rte. 95 and well worth the trip. If not this time, maybe you'll come back.

In Maine, there is the Maine Diner on Rte. 1 in Wells. Not on your route, but another one worth visiting.

Have a great trip!

Jiggers at 145 Main St in East Greenwich (only open for breakfast / lunch, except friday for dinner) should be a first choice. It's truly authentic as it was built by the Worcester Company around 1940(?). Mostly scratch cooking. Excellent and worth the trip. They even grind their own coffee beans, etc

Middle of Nowhere Diner on Rt 3 in Exeter, about a mile south of Exit 5 off I-95, between the 165 and 102 intersections is worthy for any meal, although it is not an "authentic" diner.

If you want the world's best donuts, Allies on Rt 2 off Rt 4 (around exit 5 or 6?) is the place to stop. They are also only open morning to afternoon (5-2?). Problem is you may never want to eat another Dunkin donut, Krispy Cream, etc again. They are only takeout and since they are truly fresh, they tend to stale up after a day (unlike others that kind of last for days - relatively speaking). They serve the more cake-like donuts - kind of like what DD may have sold 10-20 years ago when they served fresh donuts.
