The Food Newsgroups Pointer - Version 1 May 4, 1996
This list will be posted bi-weekly to alt.food and rec.food.cooking.
There are many food groups available for your reading pleasure. Among them are specialized groups that meet a specific need and groups that appear to serve a wide range of needs. Some of the descriptions give a pointer to rec.food.cooking, but you can still post to those groups if you choose. These groups may or may not be very active due to strange propagation of newsfeeds.
Some groups cater to a specific region, area or country. The relcom.* groups are specific to Russia and may be in a special type format. Many of the regional groups end with the suffix eats (e.g., dfw.eats, houston.eats); these groups are mostly about restaurants in those areas. Some of the regional groups end with .food or .dining. There is no set formula for the naming of these groups.
The one line description is the line that is provided by the "originator" of the group when the group is first set up. If there is no description line it is because my system didn't have one listed. Some of these groups are clearly novelty groups, but they do have traffic. If you see a group listed that it isn't on your system and you want to participate in it, ask your News Administrator or System Administrator to add it for you. If there isn't any traffic, start something.
Before you start posting to any of the groups listed below, please read the group for a while. Get a feel for how the group as a whole works. Some groups are very tightly "run" and the members don't like a lot of off-topic posts. Other groups are more free-form in nature and don't get bent out of shape when an off-topic post comes along. Please don't post the Neiman Marcus Cookie Recipe Scam and keep in mind that Craig Shergold is a healthy teenager now and doesn't want any more cards or letters sent on his behalf. Also, posts that are a part of a get rich quick or MAKE MONEY FAST scheme will only get nasty mail sent to your service provider. These are old and not-very-welcome scams.
In the next few weeks I will be making a list of the various food-related FAQ's and will provide pointers to them. This may not be a complete listing. If I have left out your favorite food group, mail me and I'll add it to the next revision of the list.
