Jim,
I know exactly what you mean!!
If you are flying out of Malpensa Airport (which is an hour from Milan), there is a great restaurant on the shores of Largo Maggiore, which has a half dozen rooms or so for lodging, and is only 20-25 minutes from the airport. It's called "Il Sole" in the town of Ranco. In the summer they serve dinner under a grape arbor by the lake shore. Outstanding cuisine. They are a member of the "Relais & Chateau" group. The morning of your flight you can have an elegant breakfast served lakeside, and be at the airport in less than 30 minutes. Lake Maggiore is wonderful itself. If you can allow two nights at this "inn" and spend a day on the lake, you won't be dissapointed.
In Verona, I would highly recomend the "Nuovo Marconi" restaurant. Their black squid-ink risotto was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy.
Sounds like a great rip.
