Contrary to popular belief, Israel is a place for foodies: good produce, excellent wines and cheese and lots of ethnic places to eat. In Jerusalem here are my picks (all are kosher with a Rabbinute tu'dah at the least): Ice cream shop (amazing mango) right next to the kosher Wendys off King George. A few doors down is the "Oriental" (not Chinese but excellent Sepahrdi) on the corner, across from Midrehov and near Jaffa St. is Felafel ha Melech (Felafel King). Try it in Iraqi pita (with bus fumes for ambience). In Baka go to the Misadonit for Kurdish (excellent lamb and dried fruits and kubbeh). Off Jaffa a few blocks from King George (in a courtyard on south side of street - forgot the name) is a good Ethiopian place run by new immigrants. There's a new kosher sushi place in theNew City. For Yeminite try the ever good and popular Yeminite Step in Naalot Shivat. There are new coffee houses springing up in Naalot Shivat and Emek Refaim. The King David and Sheraton have exceelent European trained and inspired cooking. Expensive but memorable. For sweets go to Angel's bakery (great hazelnut tartes...go to the old bakery past the Central Bus Station). Near the Russian Compound is a good Hungarian place. My favorite choice though is to graze my way through the Machane Yehuda (the city's market) and eat at the local N. African grills or buy a rotisserie chicken and picnic at the Montefiore windmill or at one of the many parks. Go to the market on Thursday or Friday morning as people shop and prepare for Shabbat. B'tayavon and Nissaya Tova. Eat Well and good trip. Elizabeth Davis [email removed]
