If you're downtown and looking for Italian food, there's the most adorable little intimate place called Amici's, on Michigan or Washington. The best breakfast (all day) you'll find in downtown Indy is Le Peep. Lots of exquisite breakfast creations, great service (but the place is usually packed.) Check yahoo.com for more opinions. last time I traveled to Indianapolis (which I do several times a year), I checked the web for recommendations. There were many downtown dining guides. starnews.com was one of them I think. Good luck kate.
