Most Indianapolis restaurants seem to be in strip malls but don't let that put you off. There's a very good Afghani restaurant called Kabul on 86th and Ditch Rd. (Don't let the names of the roads put you off either!). One of the best Korean restaurants I've ever been to is called Mama's Place, and it's on Pendleton Pike exit off I-465. You should call them for more directions. Both restaurants are very reasonably priced.

Have fun!

I like Shapiro's deli on 86th Street. There are some interesting restaurants at and around Keystone at the Crossing.

Yes! The original Shapiro's is a few blocks south of downtown on Meridian Street (actually it's across the street from the original location). The ownership is the same so it's probably the same food though. If you go there at lunchtime, expect very very very long lines. IMHO, one of the best restaurants near Keystone at the Crossing is Peter's.

Other restaurants in Indy that I like:

o Rick's Cafe Americain, downtown in Union Station o St. Elmo's steakhouse, downtown next door to the Canterbury hotel o El Sol de Tala on East Washington street (best Mexican food in town IMHO) o Renee's French Delicatessen in Broad Ripple o Star of India in Broad Ripple o The Jazz Cooker in Broad Ripple (Cajun and Creole food, live jazz)

For others, find a copy of Nuvo Newsweekly, a freebie that comes out every Wednesday (you can get it at hotels, newsstands, stores). Each issue has a list of descriptions of restaurants that have been favorably reviewed in Nuvo in the past, whether reservations are required, price range, etc. Their list is a tad biased towards the northside (Nuvo is published in Broad Ripple) but so is the distribution of restaurants in Indy.

In addition to the previously-mentioned places...

Mickler's Sirloin Inn, East Washington St. near Mitthoeffer Rd. (Eastside) Jim Murphy's Steakhouse, North Keystone Ave. at SR 37 Russia House, West 86th Street at Ditch Rd. (Northwest...very good!)

You can probably find just about any cuisine your heart desires along the 82nd-86th Street corridor along the Northside (82nd Street becomes 86th Street somewhere between Allisonville Rd. and Keystone Ave.).

Also, in addition to NUVO Newsweekly, Indianapolis Monthly is an
*excellent* source for restaurants.
