Interested in discussing restaurants in Calcutta, India?

I just returned from a short two week tour of Calcutta. Found three new __awesome__ (I mean really awesome) restaurants --- Zarang, Bedwin, and Hot Bread. Don't miss these three in your next trip to Calcutta.

Zarang
------
Zarang is an excellent restaurant situated next to the Indian Museum on Chowringhee (sp?) road. The place is elegant (fountains etc.), service is superb, and food is great. They offer primarily Muglai dishes. All drinks are domestic products, but they do serve a few excellent cocktails. For the five of us, the total bill came to Rs.2200 (including tax and tips), which is roughly $65.

Bedwin
------
Bedwin specializes in Biryani. If you visit Calcutta and don't try Bedwin, you have something to repent. Personally, I had the best biryani of my life in this restaurant.

Bedwin has three locations that I am aware of. One near Golpark, one near the Gariahat crossing, and other in Triangular Park. The one near Gariahat serves only fast food (rolls etc.).

They serve two kinds of non-veg Biryani. Plain biryani (Rs. 25, $0.80) and Hyderbadi Biryani (Rs. 50, $1.50). Both are great, but I recommend the latter. I am told that they serve a third kind on Thursdays.

Their side dishes are also excellent. I recommend the Nababi Kopta and Paneer Butter Masala.

Hot Bread
---------
This is more like a fast food joint serving hot bread with a variety of stuffings (chicken, paneer, etc.) and pizza. They have their own bakery. Its located on Lansdowne near Minto Park (next to Wokhardt Medical Center).

The bread and rolls range from Rs.10-15 (< $0.50) a piece. Also, try the cold coffee with ice cream (Rs. 25). Three of us had a full lunch for roughly Rs. 200 ($6). I am told that their soup and salad are also good.

PS: Avoid the Park Street Kwality restaurant if you can. I also
visited Piping, but it was average.

I think Zarang has been there for quite sometime, if I am not mistaken it was there when I came to USA in 1993, so it is very good, huh? At that time it was the most expensive place in Calcutta, also somehow I had the impression that the name was "Zaranj" or something, anyway what's the meaning of "Zarang" or "Zaranj", I am curious.

I wholeheartedly agree that Kwality restaurants should be avoided, the food is simply yuck! Any new chinese place in Calcutta, Mr. Mukherjee? Is there any Thai place in Calcutta? If there is one how's the food?

On a different note, I visited Montreal last month and had the opportunity of having some great chinese dishes, the best that I had ever had. Since many of us have gone/will go to that part of the world to get multiple entry H1-B/F1, it's worth remembering to visit the china town in Montreal.

There is one at Ballygunge Fari (sp?). I don't remember the name, but the place is nice, slightly pricey, but good food. Try their shrimp dish.

Yes! Include drinks for five (two scotches, one Tom Collins, one beer, and one cocktail), dessert for two, and coffee for two. Drinks themselves probably came to around Rs. 700/800.
