I was in New Dehli about two and a half years ago. I had an incredible meal at the Sheraton. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the restaurant. There are at least two restaurants in the hotel. The one I'm thinking of was the more formal of the te two. I strongly urge you to try it. It was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. david kopman

New Delhi restaurants
I stayed at the New Delhi Taj Majal Hotel my last visit. The Indian fare in the main dining room knocked my socks off - I have never before or since tasted such intensity of spices. Also had a delicious almond chicken cream curry at the Sheraton in Agra, only slightly marred by my 104 fever, deliriums, and at-oneness with any toilet within darting distance that ensued shortly there-after.

The Vega (I think that's its name) Vegetarian restaurant in the unprepossessing Alka Hotel on Connaught Circus. I had the most expensive thali dinner on the menu (less than $4, as I recall), and it was the best Indian vegetarian food I've ever had. 2. The Khyber restaurant near the bus station in Old Delhi. Spectacular Northern Indian and Pakistani cuisine. I think they've opened a branch in a more upscale neighborhood. 3. Well worth a visit is Bhim Sain's snack shop in the Bengali Market (a very small shopping area which I believe is off Kasturba Ghandi Marg near Connaught Place. The tourist office near Connaught Place can give you the location of the Bengali Market). When I'm in Delhi I got there every day for a snack. They have not only the classic Indian snack foods (dosas, channa puri, etc.), but also an enormous array of fantastic sweets (rasmulai, gulab jamun, and the best barfi in town). Don't miss this one. Indian families and schoolchildren go there to socialize and snack for hours. There are two snack shops across the street from each other. Both are good, but the one on the south side of the street is better. 4. There's also an inexpensive and excellent South Indian restaurant on Janpath near the Imperial Hotel. It's on the north side of the street. I can't remember its name, but its listed in many guidebooks. Great dosas, uttapams, and South Indian coffee. > --
