If you are on the northside, you might check out Heartland Cafe on Morse. They have quite a few interesting choices and a good beer selection too.

~Definitely. Among my favorite restaurants are Udupi and Dasaprakash, ~both of which serve exclusively south Indian vegetarian food. Sambar,

I like both of these restaurants quite a bit. I just wish that that neighborhood wasn't so hard to get to. I think I could eat uppathams every week and never get tired of them. Dasaprakash almost unanimously weighs as the favorite of all the South Asians I've talked to, it may be partly due to the mutterings I hear about the family who owns/runs Udupi being from Madras (! tsk tsk), but I've had many a pleasant meal there.

There's a hole in the all Northern place open 24 hrs that wasn't bad at all, I can't remember the name, I'll have to get it. Anyway, it's a frequented by my vegetarian Tamil friend and his meat eating roomie.

What I really, really miss, is the cooking at this place on Clark and Lawrence that a Flash cabbie took us to for the first time one late summer night. It was amazing. There was a Pakastani woman who cooked in a little tiny kitchen.
You showed up and ate at least 6 courses (plus roti and cuc/tomato/onions) of whatever she decided to cook that day until you were full for $5. It seemed like all the Flash cabbies went there to eat. Ours even decided to come in with us that night and hang out with his buddies and take care of us (brought us water, told the woman that we really did want to eat Pakastani food). The sign outside is ancient, and has a picture of a walking Vienna hotdog and the words Sport Dog. We never called it Sport Dog though, because when we were talking to Desusda, he told us this place was perfect because it had a little bit of everything. From that day on, this special place went by the name "A little bit of everything". One day we walked in and the place had changed...it was too clean and the cockroaches on the ceiling were missing. A new woman was there who tried to get us to eat cheeseburgers. Turns out the other family had sold the place and moved. I haven't found a place like it since. I think I need to corner a cabbie again and get da hookup.

Has anyone tried Udupi Palace or Mysore Woodlands in The Indian Area of Devon Avenue? Both of them are rather good. Both of them serve South Indian Vegetarian Food. By the way, Mysore Woodlands has only been in business for about 2 months and is not a reincarnation of Woodlands of Madras.

I haven't been to the new Woodlands, but the earlier one had terrible service. Although the food was good, they simply had no idea how to serve food in order. Hope the new joint understands this.

Udupi has very good food, but their dosa are the greasiest I've ever had including those I ate during 3 years of residence in India. The sambar dal and potatoes are excellent.

I had assumed the other one just moved; good to know. Udupi sort of specializes in masala dosa, and as far as I've discovered so far, they do the best of the best.

Went back to Indian Gardens last night, and it was excellent as usual. I think it and Tiffin are the best all-round places on Devon, but it's hard to adjust to the prices after being spoiled by Indian restaurants' former cheapness. Dinner for 4, with a beer apiece and some coffee was about 90 bucks. But the cooking is a big step above our former haunts like Moti Mahal and Gandhi.

yep, three times so far. a small place staffed by the owner and the cook. All vegetarian (vegan, even, i believe), asian dishes with tofu, seitan, and such things instead of meat, so you can get 'pork' in garlic sauce and so on. a bit bizarre for those folks who don't like the meat-like stuff but great for those who do. All very fresh and tasty, prices around $7-10 per dish. according to the owner, they are in the process of trying to move up to the north side, lakeview or thereabouts where a lot of their customers are from. just my opinion.
