We finally got back to Uncle Bub's (on Cass in downtown Westmont, a couple blocks south of the tracks) this afternoon. Cally has decided that Bub's purpose in life is to provide her with pulled pork, so she got a platter of that. I'm less inclined to stick to only one thing, so I had a "pick two" platter with pulled pork and a hot link. After the recent discussion about hot links I was a little trepidatious, but it turns out that Bub's links are homemade and quite surprisingly lean. Good solid meaty texture, with enough hot to go well as thin slices alternated with the rest of the food. Cally had a slice or two and thought it was a nice addition, but not worth the smaller portion of pulled pork on the pick-two platter. I can't really disagree with that, although I had plenty to eat.

We chatted with the owner (?) while deciding what to order, and he pointed out that Bub's will be serving their own corned beef next Saturday only. If I understood correctly, his family used to own (?) a place called "Links" on the northwest side - I wasn't thinking about getting hard facts, so I'm afraid I can't say how long ago this was. Anyway, their old family recipie for corned beef seems to have been very highly thought of by their customers, and last year Bub's ran out of corned beef by about 7:00. he says there's a much larger supply on hand this time; also that they're considering offering it more often in the future. In any event, the beef is in a back room corning, and will be served on the 17th from 11AM until 10PM
- if it lasts that long. $8.95 with cabbage (Cally was assured they won't force it on her), boiled potatos, steamed carrots, and bread and butter.

Uncle Bub's is a nice homey place with mighty tasty slow-smoked BBQ, and is definitely the best BBQ place I currently know of that's reasonably close to us here in Wheaton.

Coincidences - I was there too yesterday afternoon and chatted with the owner. Mentioned this newsgroup to him. I'd agree with Martin on his review of the place. The owner noted to me he had been involved in a catering operation on the northwest side, if I remember correctly. They will apply to the village this week for permission to expand their operation, which is three years old.

On the corned beef, he said they buy it containers pickled in garlic brine from an outfit they've been doing business with for years. Tomorrow (Monday) they will begin boiling it in preparation for Saturday.

As for the food, a couple of minor notes: They have three shelves of various sauces, mainly of the novelty hot variety, but unlike other places, these are open, and you can take some to your table. Also help yourself to gardeniera, jalapenos, or pickle slices. I found that the gardeniera mixed well in their homemade cole slaw. Their brown beans as a side are also pretty good, and have a little zing.

One surprise was that there are two bottles of house label barbecue sauce on each table - I tried the spicy one - and to my tase it was _really_ good. I had expected ok, but the addition of some more spicy sauce to the meat made a fine thing better.

After the discussion here on hot links, I also had one with the pulled pork. It was quite good. Lean, a bit dense, and made right there.

Topped it off with a 22 oz. Labatt's Blue on draft. (il n'y a rien qui la batt!)

Take I-294 South to Ogden Avenue West.
Ogden Ave. West to Cass Ave.
Cass Ave. South to Uncle Bub's.
Uncle Bub's is about 2 blocks south of the Burlington tracks on the west side of the street.

That cinches it, Martin and Jim's reviews have put Uncle Bub's on the top of my 'Must Try' list. Thanks for posting the great reviews.

Now if I only knew how to get to Westmont, it is past O'Hare, isn't it?

Regards,
Gary
