South of Chicago BBQ

Just got back from a bbq excursion to Plainfield, IL. Just southwest of Chicago. Reason for trip was to sample bbq made on an A.N. Bewley cooker. Same as Danny uses at his DQ I believe. This is a commercial cooker that burns nothing but logs, no gas or electric. This is something I'd been planning for about a year. Now that I'm unemployed I find I have lots of time to kill!<G> Drove about 2-1/2 hours.

Anyway, the place is called Baby Back Blues and is located right off of 30 just west of 55.Two guys (Ken & Jim) started it about 2 years ago. Lilly Cache Plaza, Rt. 30, Plainfield, IL (815) 254-6939

Right friendly guys, Ken was eager to answer my qestions, took me back behind the counter to explain how it worked and out back to see how little wood he has to stack because it is so efficient. They also have two more cookers on trailers to take to the race track during the summer.

They prefer cooking Boston Butts (Pork) and Brisket (Beef) along with some chicken to make pulled meat sandwiches. He doesn't like to do ribs, (he, God forbid, boils his ribs then places in smoker!, says that they won't sell in his area otherwise) and they are only on the menu after 4:30 PM. All 3 meats (Brisket, butts and chicken) were IMHO very high quality. Very, very tender and still moist, so good you can eat absolutely by itself. No sauce (sorry CaptRon) or bread required ! His prices aren't too high, $4.50 for a 1/3 pound sandwich or $9 per pound (Ouch). But it is delicious! Now this is the first time that I have had Beef Brisket cooked like this and it was fantastic! Brought a pound back home. (Ken was very gracious an even gave me probably an extra pound on top of the pound I bought) Made the pork taste plain. I love my pork but this beef brisket sure gives it a run for its money!
