It's been a while since I've been back to Chicago, but good places I remember are:

The Bakery near DePaul. There was no menu, you got what Chef Louis made that day. $$$$

Diana's is a good Greek restaurant.

The Marriott across from the Tribune had 3 nice restaurants on the 5th floor.

The Kinzie Steak House was my favorite for beef.

Uno's and Due's for deep dish pizza.

Corona Cafe on Rush St. near the Wrigley building.

And of course, Billy Goat Tavern under the Wrigley Building for greasy cheeseburgers.

Opinions here are my own................................

Great Chicago Restaurants
-------------------------

These were garnered from a cookbook I have at home, where a number of Chicago's top restaurants contributed recipes as part of a cookbook in which the proceeds go to support Chicago House ( a non-profit agency that provides residence and support for persons with AIDS). The book is called Specialties of the House: Great Recipes from Great Chicago Restaurants. The recipes are wonderful, and I can vouch for most of the restaurants from my days of living in Chicago. Below is a list of the restaurants, their addresses, and the recipe they contributed from their menu.

To order Specialties of the House, to benefit Chicago House for persons with AIDS:

Send $9.95 per copy (Illinois residents add 8% sales tax) plus $2.00 shipping and handling for the first copy, $.50 shipping for each copy thereafter to:

      Chicago House
      801 W. Cornelia 2-N
      Chicago, IL 60657
      (312) 337-0747 [to order by phone; Visa & MasterCard accepted]

Here's some of the restaurants. Be sure to call first, as I can't be sure all are still in operation, given the current state of the economy and the typical turnover rate of restaurants.

The following restaurants are some which I consider to be good for a fair price.

1) Connie's pizza (23rd and Archer) - IMHO the best pizza in Chicago
2) Happy Garden Bakery (24th and Wentworth) - Terrific stuffed buns. (Like dim-sum
   but baked instead of steamed.)
3) Garretts (Madison between State and Dearborn) - The best Caramel and Cheese
popcorn. (They will mix it for a "sweet and sour" taste.)
4) Como Inn (Halstead and Milwaukee) - Excellent Italian. Ask for the free garlic
bread. It is loaded with garlic - so be forewarned.
5) Nuevo Leone (18th and around Ashland) - Good Mexican with generous portions and
   good prices.
6) Rainbow's end (53rd and Harper) - Milkshakes made with Peterson's ice cream.

enjoy and let me know how you like them

you mustnt foreget shuckers on east ontario street in downtown. also ginos east is a good place to go if you want a strange time and good pizza... riccardos is a good place a little bit off of michigan avenue... [ the easiest way to find riccardos is to go to the chicago trib tower and turn facing michigan avenue... there should be a great big neon sign saying riccardos on it.]

from riccardos, there lemon soups are good....
shuckers has inexpensive seafood [considering it is downtown] at lunch, you can generally eat in shuckers for about 7 bucks a piece... riccardos i have no idea how much it costs and ginos east either as my boss used to treat when we went there so i cant imagine it would be too expensive :)

gino's east i am not giving directions to.... anyone who feels they can give good directions to finding it please do.

[i can give directions from the nbc towers if necessary, but that would bekinda stupid to go there first..]

and another place btw is Andy's especially if you love jazz music... go at lunch .... call ahead because you can find out who might be jamming at lunchtime that day.... also it is usually packed at lunch... but a wonderful place, good food , not too expensive, and wonderful people and atmosphere. also if you play, sometimes they will let you jam along.... so ask about that too if you call. [you will have to bring your own instrument]

Not too surprisingly, a lot of the ol greats can be seen playing there every once in a while..... and a lot of the new talent that is coming up too.

Have fun and enjoy!

In response to the question about worthwhile restaurants in Chicago, there are an endless number. What makes Chicago so unique is its tremendous diversity, and the cuisine here reflects this like no other city.

The best restaurants for enthusiasts are found in various ethnic communities around the city. The best of the best are:

1)China town - Located on Cermak avenue on the near south
side, there are about 15 fantastic restaurants.
Three Happiness is the best of these and is known
for its dim-sum starting at about 10am and going
            through lunch.

2)Little Italy - At Racine and Taylor Ave on the near SW
side near UIC. Such classic restaurants include
Rosebud's, Genaro's, Tuscany and many others.

3)Korean area - At Lincoln and Lawrence is one of the best
place's in the city. If you like Poo Go Gee, you'd
            love Bando.

4)Greek Town - Near west - Halsted and Adams. Great food.
Try the Parthenon or Petro Diana's(which has just
            moved to North and Halsted).

--Other great restaurants include Zum Duetschen Eck on Belmont
avenue, Reza's on Foster and Clark, Ann Sather's @
Foster and Clark, Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba at 2000 N. Halsted.

--If you're looking for great Chicago stuffed pizza (which I
recommend), don't go to Giordano's for Christ's sake!
Stick to authenticity at Gino's at Superior and
Michigan or Uno's at Ontario (west of Michigan).
