Check out Hilldale Nippon Kan or Kinokawa, both in Hoffman Estates. Also Sakura in Rolling Meadows and Mt. Prospect.

Hard to find a better (and more expensive) place than Sakura.

For cheap and very good sushi served in a fast-food diner type environment, check out Sea Ranch in Mt. Prospect on Golf Rd.

There is also Kamon (?) in Buffalo Grove in the mall at Lake-Cook and Arl Hts Rd. There is a decent smallish place in the strip mall on the Nortwest corner of Buffalo Grove Rd and Dundee.

(btw, The people who run the smaller Japanese places seem to be Korean. Is this true? )

TORISHIN RESTAURANT
1584 S BUSSE RD
MT PROSPECT IL 60056

(Just North of Dempster on Busse)

Is a real sleeper.
Torishin's serves mostly Japanese ExPats and seems to be a real social hub. Don't be surprised if you are the only non Japanese person in there. Excellent sushi and food in general.

Sakura, also in Mt. Prospect, seems less reliable.

I can recommend Kinokawa in Hoffman Estates (Algonquin Rd., a few minutes east of Barrington Rd), Daruma in Schaumburg (Golf Rd., a minute or so east of Barrington Rd), and Yuurakutei (in the Int'l Plaza on Golf and Arlington Hts. Rd. in Rolling Meadows). I've had sushi at all of the above restaurants, and while it was all fairly good, the best had to be at Yuurakutei. (I find it very odd that Yuurakutei is almost never busy, despite the quality of the sushi there.) It's the most expensive of the above, but I think it's worth it. Kinokawa has the most cheerful service (almost disturbingly so), whild Yuurakutei and Daruma have adequate (sometimes slow) service. However, the owner of Yuurakutei frequently works at the sushi bar, and he's a very friendly guy.

I can't recommend Sakura, as I think the quality was not very good for the price. Sea Ranch is very inconsistent in terms of quality (although the price is quite reasonable). Mitsuwa is pretty poor for sushi, IMHO. Mitsuwa sushi is relatively inexpensive, but it's not great in terms of quality.

Felix, Thank you. I intend to try these places out soon.

I forgot to mention Big Bowl (Golf and Arl Hts Rd). It's a popular place with the lunch crowd. I have only had sushi there once - it was OK. (Is Big Bowl the same place as Yurakutei? Big Bowl is isolated in the center of the parking lot of that mall).

There is also Benihana and Kampai which serve sushi but are more of a japanese steak places. Kampai is at Elmhurst and Oakton in Mt. Prospect and they have a floating sushi bar.

No problem. :) I hope your experiences are good ones!

I think you mean Bowl House; Big Bowl is a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant (and not a good one, IMHO) located at the Streets of Woodfield. Yuurakutei is actually NE of the mall Bowl House is in. There is a stoplight just east of Arl.Hts.Rd. on Golf; you can turn left there (assuming you're heading east on Golf) to get into the Int'l Plaza.

I've been meaning to try out Bowl House for some time, but I've somehow never gotten around to it. Judging from the sign, I've got to imagine that they specialize in donburi. Care to describe the menu for us? :)

I've eaten at Benihana once, and I'm never going to do it again. Talk about inauthentic Japanese food...bleah. Kampai was a bit disappointing - the portions weren't very large, and the seafood didn't seem quite as fresh as I'd like. Then again, it's kaitenzushi, and I haven't been to many good kaitenzushi places in Japan, let alone here.

I've been fairly happy with the place in the northeast corner of Quentin and Northwest Highway (Rt 14), I think it's called Sushi Asahi.

Bowl House at Golf and Arlington Heights Rd is also good.

There's a place named something 21 on Golf just east of Milwaukee that I don't expect to be back to - the one time I was there, the salmon of all things wasn't fresh. If they can't keep something that moves pretty fast fresh, I'm leery of the rest.

I also like Renga Tei, fresh sushi and sashimi, a wide variety of well made dishes, fresh grilled fish and crisp greaseless tonkatsu and tempura. The service is excellent, the ambiance nice and the restaurant is spotless.

One item Renga Tei has on occasion, I think it is seasonal, though I do not know the season, is middle tuna. Middle tuna is between fatty tuna (torro) and regular tuna (maguro) and is one of my favorites.

A slightly less expensive, but also very good Japanese restaurant that I have not seen mentioned before is Tampopo. Tampopo is on the far northwest side of the city proper and may not be what the original poster was looking for, geographically wise, but is one of my favorites for a quick, inexpensive meal, Japanese or otherwise.

Tampopo has good sushi and sashimi, but given its name specializes in soups, their Japanese homestyle dishes are also very good. Tampopo's service is good to adequate, depending on the size of the crowd, and the restaurant is spotless, all in all a very good value for ones dining dollar.

Enjoy,
Gary

I had a very nice take out lunch from True World Market this summer. I bought chirashi, sashimi and a couple of cans of green tea, drove a few blocks north to the Elk Preserve, parked, ate and watched the elk frolic, if animals that large can be said to frolic. A really enjoyable lunch.

True World Market is a full service Japanese grocery and has take out only, no inside seating.

Enjoy,
Gary

On Milwaukee Ave there are a couple of decent places. Sushi Joon at Dundee and Milwaukee is good, though they do tend to overdo the wasabi. Just north of Golf there's a place called Sushi Yama that is also pretty decent.

Renga Tei at Touhy & Crawford is consistantly the best Japanese food I've found in the area. It might be a little east of where you are looking, but it is well worth the drive.
