If you're in Jackowo, go to Paul "Zakopane" Harnas restaurant, on Milwaukee Ave., barely half a block south of Central Park. It's a sitdown restaurant, and I've had more than a few good authentic Polish meals there. Up the block is Staropolska, which is pretty good too, but I like Harnas better. While the buffet places have a lot of variety, the quality of food can suffer from sitting on the steam tables instead of coming straight from the kitchen. IF you really must do buffet, Czerwone Jabluszko (Red Apple) on Milwaukee near Belmont is ok, but their location up north near Devon is better. Better still is Lone Tree, but that's in Niles or something. There's also Jolly Inn, way far west on Irving Pk.
Chicago, IL
Polish food?

The Lone Tree isn't really that much > farther north from there either. oh yeah! I've only eaten in the restaurant set up once. It was very good. I just always connect White Eagle with their reception halls and facilities, and think of post-funeral events when I think of that place, being that their across from St. Adalberts cemetery, where most all my family is buried. I therefore rarely think, "let's go to dinner there"... Silly, but true.

You may be interested in the section of N Milwaukee Avenue that extends southward from Belmont for about five blocks. You will find several Polish bakeries, grocery stores, delicatessens, gift shops, a liquor store, clothing stores, video and CD shops, etc.. A restaurant is there that has won awards and is thought by many to offer the best buy in Chicago and that is The Red Apple (Czerwone Jablusko) at 3121 N Milwaukee. It offers a generous all-you-can-eat buffet with many homemade-style Polish dishes brought out fresh and hot from the kitchen. Everyone will be speaking Polish. The price depends on day and time but range is $5.89-$7.79 all-inclusive. Parking lot is behind restaurant if you are driving. If you aren't you can get there on the Milwaukee 56 bus (a good place to take it is State & Madison opposite front door of Carson Pirie Scott). Many Polish residents have moved to the suburbs but this old Polish commercial street endures.

Also on Milwaukee, just north of Division, is
Mareva's
1250 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago
Tel: (773) 227-4000
Not a casual place, very fancy and the food is authentic and fantastic. One of the last holdouts in what was largely a Polish neighbourhood.
