Cousins, just north of Diversey on Broadway. Also about 4800 N. Clark, in Andersonville, where you will also find Reza's and on the other side of the street another one the name of which I disremember.

I think it's still family run, the food is excellent, and they are very friendly. Pars Cove 435 W Diversey Pkwy Chicago, IL (773) 549-1515 Joel S. By the way, I would like to thank whoever it was generous enough to share their recommendation for the Sunshine Cafe on N. Clark. As one of my Japanese friends described it, it is pure Japanese comfort food, i.e. home cooking, no raw fish. We went there for lunch one day, ordered probably half the menu, loved everything, and the bill came to about $23. It is also so off the beaten track, and so pleasantly dumpy inside, that I doubt it is in danger of attracting Chicago chic.

It's better and cheaper than Reza's in my humble opinion. I can't recall if they call the cuisine Persian...but it's along those lines.

One place I would highly recommend is Noon O Kabab, on the northwest side of Chicago (on Kedzie a little south of Lawrence). Nothing fancy but it's really quite good. It's a small storefront restaurant that specializes in--surprise!-- kababs. The place is family-run, obviously with considerable pride. The dining room is small and basic (only 10 small tables) but there are some pleasant touches. For example, the tables are covered with nice Persian cloths (protected with plastic) and beautiful carpets hang on the walls. It tends to be quite crowded, mostly with families who all seem to know the staff and each other. I found it to be very welcoming to "outsiders" (like me) though. There are about a half-dozen appetizers (most $2-3) with the usual taboule, hummus, and baba ghannouj (all good). In addition there's olovieh (chicken and potato salad), teleat (bread with lamb shank gravy and yogurt), borani (spinach and garlic in yogurt) and must-e moosir (shallots in yogurt). They make their own yogurt and it's excellent. The entrees are mainly variations on the kabab theme (lamb, chicken, and beef in numerous styles). There are a couple of non-kabab choices like stewed lamb shank and ghormeh sabzi. This is a very green stew, with chopped parsley, claptrap (says the menu; anyone know what this is?), green onion, and cilantro, a few chunks of beef and some beans; very tasty. Only a few vegetarian entrees, however, but one really sounds intriguing: sweet and sour plums and carrots with saffron (haven't tried it yet). The dinners are preceded by a plate of bread (noon), feta cheese, parsley, onion, and tomato and are accompanied by a huge plate of perfectly prepared long grain rice and grilled tomatoes. Just about everything I've had has been outstanding. The portions are very generous, the quality of the meat is very high, and the grillmen really seem to know what they're doing. There is a small selection of desserts (baklava or bamieh are only 95 cents but I never had room) and good Turkish coffee. Almost all entrees (including the noon etc) are under $10; no alcohol is served (don't know about BYO). My only real complaints with the place are that it is often very crowded and that their selection, especially of vegetarian items, could be more extensive. On the other hand, the crowds are there for a reason and a clear focus on what they do best is admirable, particularly for a small place. One thing that kind of annoys me is that water is served in flimsy disposable plastic cups. Nonetheless, Noon O Kabab is one of my very favorite inexpensive restaurants. Be aware they don't accept credit cards. Another nice thing is that within a few blocks are some good middle eastern grocery stores and bakeries so you can stock up and do it at home. Hey Jonathan, There are a few Persian/Turkish restaurants near Clark and Foster. My favorite is Cousins. The food is excellent and the decor is very tasteful. Reasonably priced and the ice tea is very refreshing. later, and welcome to Chicago Ruben Jonathan S. wrote: > Hi there, everyone. It's not Persian, but I had a very good meal at A la Turka recently. It has a nicer atmosphere than most Middle Eastern restaurants. A la Turka Turkish Kitchen 773/935-6101 3134 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago, IL 60657 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Tu-Th; -11:30 F-Sa

Nothing fancy but it's >really quite good. <snip> We tried, at the suggestion of Rene's post, Noon O Kabab and found it excellent. I had the Soltani plate, which consisted of one kabab of seasoned ground beef and lamb and one of marinated filet, both charbroiled. My wife had the Noon O Kabob Barg, which was a large portion of the charbroiled marinated filet. Both were served with tandoori bread, Hungarian feta with fresh herbs charbroiled tomatoes and excellent Persian rice. The waiter, possibly the owner, seemed extremely eager to please and kept bringing out little tastes of this and that for us to try, ask for the lamb gravy to put on the rice and the vegetables in vinegar. There is also a shaker of a dried reddish spice on the table to be used on the kababs, it is very good, tangy and slightly spicy. I could not figure out what it was and the waiter did not know what the English name was. We had Persian tea with our meal, and jalebis for dessert, though they did not call it jalebis. It looked and tasted like the Indian sweet jalebis to me. Noon O Kabab is BYOB and very reasonably priced. Noon O Kabab 4661 N Kedzie Chicago IL 773-279-8899

There are 2 of 'em, and the other one is on Ontario, I think... Expect to pay around $15 per person. The lamb shank is unbelievably succulent... yum! As far as Thai restaurants go, however, I'd love to hear what anyone else has to say about it as well... Regards, Sherman Jonathan S. wrote: > Hi there, everyone.
