Excellent pizza by the slice like you pick up, fold in half, and chow down in NYC. Down the street is D'Ammenzo's, same style, even better in my book. I was walking by last month and the neon sign, "Pizza by the Slice", caught my eye. The big old-style pizza oven at the back was encouraging and the pies on display looked pretty respectable. The place even looks a little like a NY pizzeria with the pies on flat aluminum pans sitting on the counter behind glass. There are a few small tables near the windows. Nothing fancy. They usually seem to have 3 or 4 pizzas ready to serve by the slice. The slices are $2.50 which may sound a little steep but they're quite large and it includes a small drink (and tax). Most importantly the pizza is pretty good. On separate visits I tried the sausage and the broccoli & onion; both were tasty. The thing that most impressed me was the crust-- not real thick, not real thin, but with a bit of chew to it, something that's lacking in most Chicago pizzas. The sauce was fairly thin and very slightly sweet, along NY lines. None of those Chicago-style tomato chunks (which I also like). Cheese was fine, nothing extraordinary, as were the toppings. If you are looking for a life-altering pizza experience, keep searching. If you are in the neighborhood and want a quick slice, this is a good place. Might even be worth a detour. They also make sandwiches, pasta, etc (untried by me). Bacci Pizzeria 2356 W Chicago Av Chicago 773-342-6500 Mon-Thu 10am-12am; Fri-Sat 11am-1am; Sun 12pm-12am

Try D'Agostinos (at Southport and Addison north of Wrigley Field). They have either thin or deep dish; I had the thin crust the last time I was in town; and I found their pizza to taste identical to the best place in Denver (which is an always-busy place founded by former Chicagoans).
