Let me suggest 2 places that could hardly be more different.

Resi's Bierstube is a homey little bar with a few tables. They have a good beer selection and some good, simple food (everything German). Maybe 6 or 8 on tap and at least 50 in bottles. It's not really the season but their weissbier selection is particularly strong. The food tends toward the wurst/schnitzel direction (meats come from Paulina Market, a good sign). Prices are moderate. I like Resi's a lot.

Hudson Club is a big trendy place. Fairly interesting interior, sort of a neo-1940's supper club. The bizarre lights look like the offspring of a tadpole mated with a '50s Cadillac. The crowd is just as you would expect. Thankfully they segregate the cigar smokers in a separate room (if only they had another for the cell phone users). Hudson always gets attention for their wine list and rightfully so--they have 100 by the glass ($5-$35). They also have a smaller but surprisingly good beer selection. Maybe 15 or 20 on tap (usually at least one Belgian) and more in bottles. They even have flights of beer. I haven't eaten there but a friend of mine likes it. I can't remember the menu clearly but it's a fois-gras/grilled-ahi/wasabi-mashed-potatoes sort of place (entrees around $20). I suspect that you could probably find slightly better food for the money but I imagine it could be a fun place for a celebration.

As of a coupla weeks ago, the Chicago Brauhaus is still there, quite busy on a Friday night. Very good beer selection, moderate prices. I had my usual order of rouladen mit spaetzeln, and no complaints. Cheesy music.

Oh, it's on Lincoln, just south of Lawrence.

Their roast veal shank was pretty big. It fed me for about a week. Roast duck was nothing to write home about.
