I'd try Bistro Zinc a bit further south on Southport (almost to EL tracks). French. Very good food, great desserts and they also have a cafe in the front which offers cheaper fare (although a bit different menu, a little less variety but you can get crepes there which aren't offered in the bistro)

Bistro Zinc is a good suggestion.

On that same block is Tango Sur, an Argentinean steak house. The steaks and the chimichurri sauce are excellent and the prices are very reasonable. I also like the sweetbreads. I usually ask to have them crisped up a bit and served with extra lemon wedges. The shortribs are a good choice also. Typically when we order the sweetbreads or shortribs it is as an appetizer for the table to share, the steaks are just too good to miss out on. It is BYOB and they have an outdoor dining area, weather permitting.

Enjoy,
Gary

If you want unusual, you might check out Amitabul, a Korean/Buddhist totally vegetarian place a few blocks south of the Mercury. Not your typical Korean, but plenty of unusual stuff to explore like soybean pancakes, veggie sushi and really interesting soups and stir fries. But if your aversion to Thai/Indian results from an aversion to hot spicing, go for the very mildest they have.
