Middle Eastern food

Does anyone know if there is a middle eastern restaurant near Schaumberg?

For anyone that is interested in middle eastern food, Andy's in Chicago is excellent. Its a couple doors down from Reza's on Clark. I heard about it in this newsgroup and have to agree with the rave reviews. I had the vegetarian combination plate which consisted of falafel, hummous, tabouli, baba ghannooj, feta cheese and a yougurt-cucumber dip. In my opinion, they have the best falafel in town. The hummous was a little tame in the garlic department but it was very good. I also had the avgolemeno soup and it was good, although I think its usually a little better in some of the Greek restaurants. My husband had the lentil soup and it was excellent, although the lentils were whole and some people, my husband included, prefer them pureed. Next time I'm going to order the lentil soup. I had the chocolate mousse cheesecake for desert which I think has now become my favorite desert. Unless my memory is failing, it used to have a hole in the wall sort of exterior but now it is fixed up so attractively I thought they must have closed and this was a new restaurant.

I'd love to hear about other middle eastern restaurants and particular dishes to try. I tend to either get kofta (sometimes I guess it is spelled kifta) or vegetarian plates. Its time for me to branch out and try something new.

There is Pita House which is 2 blocks south of Schaumburg Rd on Roselle Rd (in a strip mall on the east side of the street). The fare is OK but cheap and fast.

Sayat Nova, Armenian but similar, is located on Golf Rd. just west of Mt. Prospect Rd (I think). It is not in Schaumburg but the drive is not very long. IMO, the fare is good and reasonably priced.

Funny, I had the same experience a few weeks ago. We were going to go to Andie's and I drove right by. I was looking for a "hole in the wall" place and did not realize that they had changed the exterior. I saw Reza's and knew that Andie's was right next door, but still missed it. I will have to try the newly remolded place. We did not go to Reza's as I must be one of the only people in Chicago who is not overly fond of Reza's.

We like Hashalom, a Moroccan/Israeli restaurant on Devon. They have very good Middle Eastern food and also couscous and a delicious stuffed Cornish hen. We usually split the Israeli combination plate and order soup and a main dish or two. With the main courses they serve a small plate of olives and pickled turnips, the pickled turnips are fantastic and they make them in-house.

They serve red and green hot sauces, the green seems to be just grated jalapeno and goes well with the falafel. You often have to ask for the hot sauces to be brought to the table. Cigars are an interesting appetizer and, for a lack of a better description, like a Moroccan spring roll. The foul is a nice starter also, pureed fava beans topped with sliced egg and tahini.

The prices are beyond reasonable, verging on embarrassingly inexpensive. They do not have a liquor license. We have never brought in wine or beer, but I don't think that they would mind.

Enjoy,
Gary

It seems variable. On week nights it is much better than on crowded weekends. Also, they don't wash the parsley very well, it is very sandy (you get a plate of parsley, feta and radishes).

I do enjoy Reza's Eggplant steak, and I like the lentil soup. Their persian salad (chopped cucumber, onion and tomato) is not great.
