Devon places seem to shine in the first year or so they're open and then go down hill from there. I'm a big fan of southern Indian food, but we'd originally headed up to Devon to eat at Dehli Darbar kabob house because I had an argument to win about the merits of Dehli Darbar vs. JK Kabob house (which I wasn't impressed with) with a certain meat loving Gujarati from Bombay. (The funny thing about my meals at Dehli Darbar were that most of them were eaten with a vegetarian from Madras, a Singaporean and a Bengali in the earliest hours of the morning...). However, DD was closed...like an idiot I didn't realize they aren't open during the day, just the night. We wandered up and down Devon before I managed to twist the arms of my eating companions into checking out Madras Palace...it took some doing since the menu is pure vegetarian. Some background on the place: the owner is Panjabi, the chef is from Madras and there is a weird bright orange "top secret" coconut based chutney the owner refuses to talk about! The food was fabulous. It reminded me of how Udupi used to to taste when I moved here 8 years ago (I think it sucks now). The sambar was really, really good, and so was the rasam. The dosai heavenly and made to order (we did the buffet), iddly were good, but how can you screw them up??, and various pulses and veggie dishes were all good, some I liked a lot better than others, but I think that's just personal taste. The coconut chutney tasted like the coconut was grated that morning. Really good food. Even the meat eater left happy. I'm going back to check out the uppatham. Get there before it isn't good any more. regards, trillium Madras Palace 2544 W.
