There is a kosher (CRC; Chicago Rabbinical Council) restaurant on Dempster just west of McCormick called Ken's Diner with another place called Bugsy's attached to it; it's a steak/hamburger joint - the same owner has a place on Devon and Kedzie. Personally, I don't recommend them; if the food isn't greasy, it's dry and tough, the veggies are terribly greasy, too. Salads are wilted and yellow. The steaks taste of freezer burn. There is also a storefront on Devon called Hava Nagila, also CRC, which has Yemenite/Israeli food - kebabs, felafel, etc., which is pretty good. There is a kosher Thai restaurant on the north side of Dempster, west of McCormick - it is not CRC approved, although many say the certification is just as good. I think it is called Tu Do, or something like that. I ate there once and was not impressed. There are also some other storefronts around the Devon area, such as Jerusalem (a dump) and Mit Zu Yun, a kosher Chinese restaurant - never ate there. Can't think of anywhere else offhand - there really is a dearth of good kosher restaurants in Chicago. Too bad Annie's, which was in the Congress Hotel, is gone. The steaks were good, although nothing else was.

There's a list of kosher restaurants at http://condor.depaul.edu/scohn/NTJC-Fd.html Slice of Life on Dempster in Skokie is fairly good, if it's still there. Your wife should ask carefully about what the person's standards are. Many kosher-keeping Jews will also eat in vegetarian restaurants, which gives you some more choices. Others will eat fish. People tend to be idiosyncratic about kashruth. If the diner's standards are very strict, an easier and more palatable bet might be having lunch brought in by a kosher caterer. There are a lot more of them than there are kosher restaurants and their food is better. Leah Zeldes
Try Mit Zu Yan (not sure of spelling), a Chinese restaurant on Devon that has certification good enough for Hasidm...(can't get much stricter than that...) :-). Food is OK...considering limitations imposed and a pleasant enough, comfortoable doubel store front.
