Define "great." How much do you want to spend?

Highest class place: la petit folie, in Hyde Park Shopping Center. French Bistro. Expect $20-40 per person at least... Very good. Very expensive.

When I lived there, we'd often go to Pizza Capri. Reasonably good pasta and good prices. Pizza is good there too.

Nice also is Calypso. A bit more casual than both Pizza Capri and La Petit Folie, the food is terrific. There Jerk Chicken Wings are a terrific (and huge) appetizer. Any one of their tilipia would be good, as would their jerk chicken platter. Try their fried plantains and the rice, but when they serve green beans, just skip 'em.

You could also do Dixie kitchen, but I've found it always too crowded. The main dishes are very good, but the sides leave something to be desired.

All three of these are in Harper Court.

Four other quick mentions:
There's a Leona's if that is something you're interested in: 53rd street shopping center, by Woodlawn. It's what you'd expect from Leonas....

Piccolo Mondo is often ignored, but they've got some good pastas too. They're at something called the Windamere (I think), basically at 56th (or so) and Cornell, across from the Museum of S&I. I like this place, but once had a bug in my salad. They probably didn't rince it thoroughly, but you take from this what you will...

The student/university croud really likes the Medici. Its a good, laid back sort of place with good fare. It's on 57th street, between kenwood and kimbark. Like the other places on 57th, there is no alcohol, and I'm not sure if you can bring your own or not. Try the burgers there....

Finally, if you are looking for quick/cheap food, I go back and forth between Noodles (there's one on 57th next to Medici and one on 53rd by Harper) and Ragin' Cajin' (also on 53rd, across from Noodles). The latter has some great Indian food, the former some good cheap Thai.

Does that help?

IMHO, The Snail is the best Thai in HP. Our favorite dishes are the Gai Tom Ka (sp?), the Shumai and the Pad See Eew. All of their curries are good as well. I wish we had Thai as good as the snail out here in Santa Barbara, California. :(

La Petit Folie is good but definitely overprices, and the service is crap. I went there once, waited about 10 min for someone to notice me, take my coats, and seat me. I brought my own wine (there is a corkage fee), and they didn't even open it for me. The food was o.k. but overpriced. If you want that kind of stuff, try one of the good bistros, like Kiki's.

I'd go for Calypso, my favorite here (I live in the area). The ribs, esp. the full slab, are fantastic, as are all the appetizers, the jerk chicken, and the full pints of (unfortunately overly cold) Goose Island Honkers Ale. Not pricey, either.
