There's only one Mr. Beef "downtown," but it isn't in the Loop. It's on North Orleans Street at West Huron Street, about a mile from the Loop. The nearest L stop is the Chicago Avenue station on the Brown (Ravenswood) Line, about two blocks away. On Saturday, its hours are something like 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to the telephone directory, Al's No. 1 Italian Beef, of West Taylor Street fame (about 2 miles from the Loop), seems to have a branch on West Ontario Street, at about North Wells Street (about three-quarters of a mile from the Loop). Don't know its Saturday hours, if any, or how it compares to the Taylor Street original. I suppose the nearest L stop would be the Brown (Ravenswood) Line's Merchandise Mart station or the Red (Howard) Line's Grand Avenue station.

Some have posted previously about an Italian beef place on the southwest fringe of the Loop, somewhere behind Union Station. Maybe someone remembers.

FWIW, I've eaten there recently, and it's
still good.
