I will heartily second the Berghoff, except on the beer front, they serve their own beers, which are okay (ie way better than an American macrobrew), but not wonderful. If a good German beer is important too, check out the Chicago Brahaus. 47xx N. Lincoln, a block or so from the Western stop on the brown line (be happy to give directions from a specific locale if you have one). Their food is not quite as good as Berghoff. Spaetzle is wonderful. Schnitzels are very good.
