Depends on where you are shopping. If you are on State Street you could check out the Walnut Room in Marshall Field's. They have a salad (sorry, don't remember the name) where a piece of rye bread is topped with a piece of swiss cheese and then with half a head of iceberg lettuce and MF's famous homemade thousand island dressing. It may not sound great, but hmmmm. Down a side street is the Berghoff. This is an old German style restaurant with different rooms. Cash only. Anything from wonderful sandwiches to hot meals. They make their own ginger ale, root beer, beer & (I think) whisky). This is an old traditional Chicago landmark and if you are visiting town you should make a pilgrimage here. If you are shopping on Michigan Avenue (Watertower Place), and restaurant in there is nice. If you want to go real "uptown" check out the Ritz Carlton, located in Watertower Place via a separate entrance. Also for Michigan Avenue check out the original Uno's Pizza on a side street, or head down to Rush Street (just a short walk away) and you'll find lots of great places. Chicago is a wonderful restaurant town. Have a great time! Pup K. wrote in message ... |What Chicago restaurant would you take a break for lunch from Christmas |shopping at? | |JoanL

The original location, across the street from Marshall Field's, is better, but the wait a little longer. I personally would not waste my time or palate at the Walnut Room at Marshall Field's. original: 111 N. Wabash, 7th floor. upscale remake: 600 N. Michigan, actually on Rush, (and not too far from Pizzeria Uno and Due.) Wonderful gumbo, and other quasi cajun dishes. Joel
I would not even waste my day or my money on the Walnut Room. Dirty, slow, and not great food. I would go to the Hancock Building though and try the Signature Room on the 95th floor. Not only do you get a great meal (buffet for $9), you also don't have to pay $7 to go two floors up to see the view from the observatory. You get a breathtaking view and a pretty good lunch. Parking is very $$ though. Taxi's are probably cheaper. Have fun! http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/2201/chicago.html
