The Bangkok on Hubbard St. is one of the best Thai restaurants around and it's very cheap.

Hubbard and State (maybe two blocks west of the Tower) is NaNa's; it's part of the Alex Dana Rosebud/Centro/Carmine's restaurant empire, but without the who's who atmosphere or higher prices. Fantastic for lunch (lower prices) but still great for dinner. One of the best calamari prep's (fried) I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Dinner prices are a buck or two higher, but the lunch menu doesn't have many dishes over $10.95, with most in the $7-9.95 range. Owner is a former Chicago boxer and a real personable guy. I eat there whenever I'm over at IBM plaza (it's right across the street) and think it's one of Chicago's best values.

I ate at Nana's last Friday, and didn't think much of it. the salads were disapointing. Salad dressing tasted like it was out of a bottle, and a few sorry pieces of provolone and red onion do not make a salad "Italian". Spinich salad came with the same onion and "italian" dressing, (only other choice was ceasar). Pasta was passable. The bread was good.

Not exactly in the Loop, but your request brings to mind Chicago's best cafeteria - MANNYS Coffee Shop and Deli. Enlist a friend, grab a cab, go to Jefferson and Roosevelt. Get in line. Order soup. Order a handcarved sandwich. (If you split with your friend, and admit it to the server, he'll give you two plates and two pickles.) Get at least one potato pancake. Act like a regular, DON'T get your money out in the food line
- You pay on the way out. Find a table and enjoy. This is not the cheapest lunch ever (sandwiches at $6 or $7), nor is it cutting edge cuisine (also have stews, baked fish, mashed potatos, cold salmon plate etc.). But its really really good, and you will not need to eat again for days.

Mama Falco's. Nothing fancy, but excellent egglplant parm sandwiches and beef sandwiches, and pretty good pasta. Cheap, too. It is on Wells, near Madison. It is not "Papa Falco's," that is a hot dog/hamburger stand by the same owners.

I got food poisoning there about 2 months ago; the Board of Health was called in. Never went back.
