I have always been pleased with the salsas at Lalos. Each location makes it a bit different, but at their Oak Park/Eisenhower Xway location, they serve a green/lime salsa and a red/cilantro salsa. They are very busy dinner hours about 5 days a week, but there was no wait last night (Wednesday). If you like salsa, you'll love their Tingas Cameron, shrimp with tomatoes and chilopole peppers (sp?). These peppers have a deep flavor which many would identify with barbeque flavor. (I make the green sauce a bit hotter with the bottled green sauce on the table)
I also like the salsa at New Rebozos at Maple and Madison in Oak Park. Quite chunky, a good ratio of cilantro, pretty hot. Michael, their top waiter, is a Senior at Fenwich and is saving for a Harley. He thought he would have earned it by now, but he's only saved 1/2 enough so far. He's a real cutey. Great food, great service. I don't know about their margaritas, I'm not allowed to have them anymore.
Both of these restaurants make their corn chips fresh and often they arrive at the table hot.
Mexican restaurants have become a favorite choice for Christmas parties, so expect them to be very busy in the next few weeks.

Best Mex in Chicagoland
Lalo's gets my vote for the best Mexican food in Chicago. I can't vouch for their salsa though. The best tortilla chips I think are at Maravilla's in Hyde Park. Not sure why, but they do taste better than other places. Greg remove nospam from my e-mail address. Stop by "Screams from the Third Rail!" for Chicago restaurant reviews, general Windy City info, and fun stuff. http://m2.aol.com/mistamoose/
Best Mexican restaurant in Chicago land area is in Park Ridge, Hay Caramba on Northwest Highway (146 Euclid Ave to be exact)... Chicago tribune's highest rated Mexican restaurant. It is simply incredible. Cheri wrote: > I'm looking for a new place to eat Mexican food in Chicagoland. User-Agent: YA-NewsWatcher/4.1.2 Xref: alexander.INS.CWRU.Edu chi.eats:6593 I saw Topolo, so I'll add Frontera Grill to this recommended list. It's way superior to many that are mentioned, IMHO. They have a variety of salsas, from the Rosted Jalepeno-Tomato Salsa, the Tomato-Habenero Salsa, and Rosted Tomatillo Salsa. I especially love the habenero variety. And if you love Margaritas, this is the place. They have the absolute best -- order the Topolo Margarita. Fresh limes, sugar, ans Sauza Commemorativo. I'm not kidding...they're the best in town, served as Margaritas should be. Anyone who thinks otherwisen (that they aren't the best) has no taste buds or is just plain stupid. IMHO, of course. No...forget that. They are the best margaritas. And for those who love cooking at home, buy "Rick Bayless' Mexican Kitchen" cookbook. He's the owner of the restaurant and the cookbook is filled with great, simple recipes. Not to mention the recipe for the Topolo Margarita. Plus, there's a great restaurant I've been to twice, just north of Logan Square on Milwauwkee (south side of Milwaukee). The owner/chef is a former Topolo/Frontera chef and the food is outstanding. Sorry, forget the name.
I agree with John that Frontera Grill and Topolo are still the best Mexican restaurants around. Rick Bayless runs an incredible operation at both restaurants. The restaurant on Milwaukee that John is thinking about is called Ixcapalazo (I am quite certain that I spelled this incorrectly). And yes, the chef, Geno, worked at Frontera for a long time. His restaurant, located at 2919 N. Milwaukee (773-486-7340), is very good.

I cannot get enough of their salsa. I'm not sure of the exact address. It's about a block north of the Paulina Ravenswood el stop (@ Roscoe). Yum!
