If you're going to Evanston, try Merles on Benson Ave. Fantastic chicken and chops, and the ribs are no slouch either!! Actually I'm not quite sure which is the true original; there are several on the south side. Not bad at all. I'm not fond of their mild sauce (probably the sweetest I've had) but like their hot version quite a bit. Also on the south side are the well-known Lem's and the lesser-known DD&S, both of which I like a little better than Leon's. Ribs are the things to get at all three. One of these days I'll get around to posting more on these, and other, south side places. My research is not yet complete; there are still a few more ribs to eat. All of these places are open quite late (to tie this in with another thread). How about a slab of great ribs at 2 or 3 in the morning? Both Leon's (the 79th location) and DD&S (the S Chicago location, not the Stony Island one) have parking lots immediately in front of the door so you don't have to walk far. I've never had any problems whatsoever but it certainly pays to be careful.

It'a disappointing that this large city affords few places that have both great ribs and a safe, comfortable atmosphere, though. I went to Merle's Smokehouse (847/475-7766, 1727 Benson Ave., Evanston) and found the ribs decent -- nicely chewy -- but not as flavorful as those of the late, lamented Bones. My husband liked the barbecue sandwich, though. Maybe we could organize the chi.eats barbecue tour of South Side Chicago? Rent a bus, go in a group? Leah Zeldes
