Marshall Field's State Street store during lunch. I'm not sure what they call the place... it's where they have sandwichs and salads... like a cafeteria. It's on the main food floor, not in the _basement_. The same floor as the ice cream bar. Actually, the same floor as the Walnut Room, but twist around the sections and you'll find it. Go along, Faust, they'll make any kind of salad you'd like! They usually have some good soups as well, and I'm sure they always have a veggie soup. Maybe it's called the English Pub? Jeez. I wish my mind was clear... some minor surgery this evening...

Well, anyway, the fish and chips are very good, really crispy with (I thought, having been to London) an authentic crust. Go about 12:20 when anything prepared in advance has run out and the lines aren't too long. But you'll have to wait in a longer line for your salad than your friend will for their fish.

If you are lucky, you'll be able to sit by the window overlooking Block ?? (damn drugs) where they have ice skating during most winters and special events all other seasons.

They have an enclosed smoking room in the southwest corner of the facility, which is very smokey. If you are at all sensitive to smoke, don't sit near that room.

It's not the most beautiful room in the city :>, but they do have great fish and chips, salads, sandwiches, and soups. Expect to spend $8-10, which is more than I spend at McGreens. Overall, tho, a good deal.

Jude

PS: I apologize for rambling.

The Fish Keg on Howard Street is excellent, but it's carry-outs only. Lots of varieties of fish, too.

I like The Duke of Perth on Clark and Wellington -- Scottish food, including, but not limited to, good fish and chips.

Tommy Nevin's Pub. They have whitefish and cod.

Duke of Perth on Friday is okay, but a little greasy.

However, I spent many, many evenings last summer wolfing down excellent fish 'n' chips (with some of the best malt vinegar ever) at a place called the Ace Cafe, on Roscoe just east of Damen.

It's patterned after a 50's British biker cafe, and though the fare is eclectic, they have two great Brit dishes: the fish and a shepherd's pie. Also some veggie fare, so you can both go.
