When I was in Budapest two summers ago, I ate at Gundel, a very famous restaurant not far from the City Park and Heroes' Square. It had just been redecorated and was fabulous inside. Of course there was gypsy music all evening. Gundel is well-known for its dessert pancakes. What was more memorable than the food was the luxurious, old-world atmosphere of this beautiful restaurant.

It has been about 5 years since I've visited Budapest so don't take everything I say as the gospel as my memory could be a tad off. Anyway, when I was there we ate at my conference site and didn't go out that much. But, I do remember a pleasant dining experience at a very nice restaurant (unfortunately I don't remember the name) but it was the primary restaurant on Margaret Island, which sits in the Danube River separating Buda from Pest. It was my impression that most of the restaurants were on the Pest side. Another place you might try for pastries and light refreshment is Gerbeaud's in Vorosmarty Square. Some of the River Tours offer a Dinner Cruise, which was good and the view of the city lights at night, particularly The Chain Bridge, were great. For additional information, try the local bookstore and browse in the travel section and see if they have any travel guides on Hungary. Another possible source is to contact the Hungarian Embassy or nearest Consul and request tourist information. Hope this helps.
