If it's still around, try Hamburger Mary's for an inexpensive, great hamburger!

Try a Chinese restaurant called "Maple Garden" somewhere on (or off of) S. King St. From Wakiwaki, get on McCully and you'll eventually hit S. King. Best bet is to call them up for specific directions when you get there. May well be the best Chinese restaurant I've eaten at- and I have sampled quite a few of them all over the world. Prices are quite moderate.

More easy to get to are restaurants in the newly opened Aloha Tower off Ala Moana blvd and by the piers in downtown Honolulu. Try the "sake soy" at the micro brewery there. Prices are not bad for what is apparently a tourist oriented place.

If you're quite comfortable with getting around Honolulu (or are very adventurous) try Helena's at N. King St. This is an old Hawaiian restaurant that opened in the 40's. Lots of "kamaiina's" eat there. Gotta try the lau lau's. The restaurant is located in a hole-in-the-wall, but the prices are good and the service is friendly - although sometimes slow (but, then again, you're in the islands).

Then there's Aoyama's, an authentic sukiyaki and shabu-shabu restaurant. OK, it's kind of pricey, but not as far as authentic Japanese cuisine goes. Even if you don't end up eating there, call up the restaurant manager anyway and tell him his brother-in-law send his warmest aloha. His name's Lyonel.

Have Fun,
