Try going to the Grand Wailea its beautiful there. They have a nice dining area that looks onto the beach. But get there early before night since there is really nothing to see at night sinces it is really dark.

The best restaurant on Maui may be David Paul's in Lahaina. Wonderful mixture of Asian-Pacific and nouvelle. Also try Scarole's in Lahaina... great Italian and a very funny radio commercial (when I was there last). And the Grill and Bar at Kapalua Bay Hotel. And the lunch buffet at the Hyatt in Kaanapali... it's about $12, but there's unlimited ahi sashimi, which you can snort up twelve bucks worth of in about thirty seconds.

Maui no ka oe. You'll love it.

Two recommendations are David Paul's Lahaina Grill in Lahaina and Mama's Fish House outside of Paia. They are both excellent, though very different. They are a step beyond the typical hotel fare.

My vote is for Roy's up in Kahana. Reserve at least two weeks before you go. The food is exciting. Make this a big splurge. Their number is 808-669-6999. You won't be sorry!

Try Eric's Seafood. There is one in the Kahana Villas Condos in Kahana and one in Kehei. Mama's is supposed to be good but haven't eaten there. The restaurant at the Hana Maui hotel is very good if you get to Hana. Have a great time.

I haven't been to Maui in three years, but my husband and I really
enjoyed Gerard's on the first floor of the Plantation Inn in Lahaina. The Plantation Inn itself was a very lovely and romantic almost B&B. I don't know if it's still there, but that was the highlight on Maui. If you want to be truly decadent, take the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai and have dinner in the smaller of the two dining rooms at the Lodge at Koele. The Lodge is like a hunting lodge with a massive central room with twin fireplaces. There are beautiful grounds. Best wishes for your trip!

I'll recommend Mama's Fish House in Kuau although it's not cheap.

Mama's (it's actually in Paia) was good but in fairness it was too expensive for what it delivered, and certainly in comparison to other places we ate when we were on Maui last month. $25-30 for a piece of fish is just too much in my book, especially other places charge less. You're paying for the atmosphere, it seems. What it IS very good for is a place to eat before your flight if you've got an evening flight.

The absolute best meal we had while on Maui was at Roy's Kahana. First, the food was wonderful (be sure to have the chocolate souffle for dessert!). Second, the prices were very reasonable, and especially so given the quality of the food. Third, the portions were a very reasonable size, which sort of was a pleasant surprise given the quality and price. We ate a 2nd time at Roy's Nicolina, and while it was also good (same dessert!) I would have to say that it did not measure up to Roy's Kahana in terms of the service that we had (this may have been more a matter of having incredible service the first time we were there) and the preparation seemed a bit off. Nevertheless, eat at Roy's, and eat there often :-). And be sure to make reservations at least a couple of days in advance, probably more during the busy season.

My 2nd choice, as someone else recommended, would be Gerard's. This is French food with some Hawaiian influences (raw fish appetizer, mango tarte tatin). The food was great, the service very good (altho not at the level of our first meal at Roy's, until we spoke to Gerard and mentioned that we had met someone he knew in LA and said to eat at his place, at which point it became Mr Rubin this and Mr Rubin that, they also paid for our desserts :-). BTW, the mango tarte tatin was WONDERFUL.. I figured, how often will I have the chance to eat this dish... let me tell you, Gerard knows his puff pastry!!! If you collect AAdvantage miles, you can get 3 miles per dollar spent at Gerard's thru their AAdvantage Dining program. Oh yes.. you can also eat outside on the terrace, which was quite nice when we were there, even if it's facing a street and not the ocean.

Try Roy's Kahana Grill in Kahana. Just a short drive from Kaanapali and you will NOT be dissapointed. Try the seared Ahi tuna, or the pot stickers and szechwan (sp?) baby back ribs. Very reasonably priced for Hawaii also.

Why limit yourself to "fine yuppie scum" restaurants?

Try Casanova's in Makawow for good Italian food, and music some nights.

Try the Westin in Kaanapali. Great ambiance - dine with swans & water falls - great food & fine wine. Can't remember the name of the restaurant but it wasn't the "Sign of the Falls" which required more formal dress. Enter the lobby and make a left and keep on going. It'll be worth it.

Enjoy, Steve

We go to Maui every Christmas for two weeks (and usually one other week during the year) so we know most of the good/great restaurants on the island. We also consider the food and wine to be one of the most important aspects of our trip, so we take it seriously.

We think the best restaurant on Maui is the Seasons Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort in Wailea. Great food, setting, jazz band. Just really nice.

We also like Gerrard's in Laihana for food and ambiance.

Other favorites include:

HaileMaile General Store in Upcountry -- we really like this. David Paul's Laihana Grill (great for getting lots of little portions). Seawatch at the Wailea Gold Course Clubhouse (also great for breakfast) Raffles at the Stouffer's Wailea

Have fun and enjoy.

For the absolute best seafood on the island go to "Mamas Fish House".
