Last month I requested and received suggestions for Berlin restaurants. Now, returned from a trip there, I add my own suggestion for those heading to Germany. The Zwiwwel Weinstuben, at Bruchsaler Strasse 6, W=1000 Berlin 31 (telephone 8 53 25 78), a few blocks from the Bundesplatz U- and S-bahn stop, was enjoyable in several ways. The atmosphere suggests, by means of decor and lighting, a Victorian era establishment, though in fact the small restaurant is only twenty-some years old. Every inch seems taken up by decoration or by antiques, and much of the lighting is provided by candles. The food is in the Prussian tradition, and so is not typical of what is found in "German" restaurants in the USA, which tend to prefer the Bavarian tradition. Many fish dishes, cold meats, and wurst dishes are on the menu. Service lets you feel very well tended, yet staff is at a minimum. This was probably the most satisfactory restaurant of those visited on a two-week stay. Price is moderate by German standards -- two might easily run up a tab of fifty dollars with wine.
