Gasthof Luisenbrau, Luisenplatz 1, across the street from the south- east corner of Charlottenburg Palace, has beer brewed on-premises, and hearty food served from a buffet counter, all at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is that of an old-fashioned Berlin pub-restaurant, and you'll be surprised that the place has been in business for less than ten years.

Otherwise, head on down to Hardtke's, just off the Kurfurstendamm. "Eigene Schlachtung", the sign claims: "We slaughter our own". Good beer on tap, too, including Pilsner Urquell and Budvar. Old-Berlin pub- restaurant ambiance inside.

Also, in the Nikolaiviertel, there are a couple of good places in this restored neighborhood. One of them is known for using potatoes in their main courses, and they do a good - and imaginative! - job of it, surprisingly enough. Nearby is an older place, carefully rebuilt, serving old-fashioned Berlin-German food.

If you have some money to splurge on a nice place, the Bamberger Reiter may also be suitable.
