For "steeped in character", try the Cafe Bleibtreu, on Bleibtreustr (near the Savignyplatz S-Bahn station) - not a restaurant - more like a place to have coffee or a beer, and read the paper. I believe that desserts and sandwiches are available. This neighborhood is quite interesting, and I believe you'll find other worthwhile places to go. One place I've wanted to try, but only heard about, is Schwartzes Cafe, on Kantstr (I believe). One of the few 24-hour places in Berlin, gets an interesting clientele. I've had very good Indian food twice in a restaurant called Golden Temple on a street off the Ku-damm. Check a phone book for the address. Good Turkish food is very easy to find in Berlin. Head to the Kreuzberg district and just walk around until you find a likely place.
