For seafood I would recommend the Atlanta Fish Market - high scale, terrific quality, but not cheap and Bacchanalia - California style cuisine, one of the city's best restaurants with spectacular seafood dishes a staple on the $35 prix fixe menu.

For southern, at the low end it is hard to beat the Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge in Midtown. At the higher end try Horseradish Grill or Buckhead Diner, both of which do very innovative spins on traditional southern cooking.

The Atlanta Fish Market and restaurants in the Peasant Group (The Peasant, Peasant at Phipps, Pleasant Peasant, and others) have great seafood and some regional cuisine. The Kudzu Cafe is one of the better nouveau Southern style restaurants and is easy to find in Buckhead on Peachtree Road near Lenox Square.

Also good is South City Kitchen (call in advance for reservations!). Their BBQed Swordfish on Cheese Grits is one of my favs, and with appetizers like Collard Green Eggrolls or Charleston Crab Cakes you've got a great meal. Moderate price.

A little hole in the wall for excellent fish is Luna Si on Peachtree Road. The chef makes some amazing, excellent combinations. Prices slightly less than the Atlanta Fish Market (I like that too) but Luna Si has a much more cozy atmosphere.

You didn't ask, but if you have the time drop by Thai Chili on Briarcliff Road. Excellent Thai food.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

i've worked in the restaurant biz in atlanta for a while now, (in the kitchen), and here are some of my favorites: murphy's in va-hi, also harvest in va-hi, brassiere le coze, and of course bacchinalia. the flying biscuit and fellini's in candler park are also good. if possible, aviod buckhead like the plauge, the restaurants are overpriced and the service snotty. just so you know, the average foodservice employee in atlanta is NOT TOO HAPPY about the olympics coming here. the owners are going to make big cash, the rest of us are going to bust our butts for the same old thing we always get; low pay, long hours and hot kitchens. and no, atlanta is not going to be ready.

Good luck :)

Atlanta has lots of good restaurants, and I wouldn't exclude Buckhead based on this comment. It's the patrons hanging around Buckhead that can be "snotty" - I've never had "snotty" service. Buckhead tends to get very crowded, especially on weekends, and the Olympics won't help that. A couple I've been to that I can remember the names of (besides the standard Bennigans, TGIF, etc.)

Bone's (Piedmont Rd, near Peachtree St, near Buckhead) is a great steak place - outstanding service

Cheesecake Factory (Peachtree St., in Buckhead) - novelty place, great food, huge portions, decent service, often quite a wait though. Park in their lot and it's valet only ("free", excluding tip). Don't know if it's related to the valet service mentioned before, but I've never had a problem.

I'll have to agree with the other post to avoid Atlantic Fish Market (Buckhead), but not because of the valet necessarily, but the service inside was bad.

Look up an Italian place called Macaroni's. They're real good food, down to earth kind of place. There's one in Roswell (north of Atlanta), but there may be one closer.

I rarely visit downtown anymore because the Olympic preparations make it too difficult to get around. But down there is a tourist-type place called Underground Atlanta. There is a seafood place at one end that was pretty good (sorry, name slips my memory). I avoid Planet Hollywood & Hard Rock.

>the average foodservice employee in atlanta is NOT TOO HAPPY about the

Not just food service employees. I've heard this from several other sources.

>and no, atlanta is not going to be ready.

Again, several other sources concur with this comment.

Have fun,

My favorite is "The Sundial" a revolving rest. on the 72nd floor of the = Westin Peachtree Plaza. The food is wonderful and so is the service. We = always go there our last night in Atlanta whenever we go which is about = 4 times a year. Be sure and try it.

I'll 2nd the Buckhead area. The Ritz-Carlton is a 5 star fixed price resturant. Only 2 prices, 1 with a different wine with each course and the other without. The Buckhead Dinner looks like a dinner from the outside, but is really a fine resturant with an up scale menu.

It depends on the type of food.

But some "Off Beat" favorites include:

Rib Shack - In Buckhead off of Roswell Road
(Hole in the wall with great food)

Alpha Soda
(Southern Country Cooking - In Alpharetta off of Haynes Bridge Road)

Dante's Down the Hatch
(Fondu, Great Atmosphere and Decor - Live Alligators Off of Peachtree Ind. across from Lenox Mall)

Italian
(I forget the name, but it is located - 85S, Left on Cheshire Bridge, less than a mile on the Right)

Atlanta Fish Market
(This is one of those trendy places, but I have been hard pressed to find better seafood in Atlanta, the only place that comes close in my opinion is the Fish House in Buckhead)

Down Wind
(Great Simple food, awesome hamburger, located on the premisis of Peachtree Dekalb airport)

57th Fighter Squadron
(Beer Cheese Soup and Wine List is excellent, the rest depends on what you order)

Landmark Diner
(24 Hour Service - Great for a late night snack)

I could keep naming reastaurants, but if you tell me the type of food and are you are planning to be in I can be more helpful.

Looking at this list and all I can say is that everyone has their own opinion. My list would include Matt's Rib Shack on Piedmont Alpha Soda, I would definitely take off the list... Food is not really Southern, and service is lousy and is definitely over-priced. Dante's is fun...Be sure you sit "on the ship" and are there after 8:30P so that you can listen to the Paul Mitchell Trio. I used to go to Dante's at Underground in the late 60's/early 70's just to listen to Paul Mitchell. Truly a good jazz pianist and does alot to teach music to underprivileged children. Food is good at Dante's also. Ember's in Sandy Springs (north of Buckhead, outside I-285) is good for seafood, not the best, but better than average and not as expensive as Atl Fish Mkt. Italian-our favorite hole in the wall Italian is Casa Nueva on Highway 9 north of Alpharetta and south of Cumming. Landmark Diner, we don't care for just because we don't. The several times we have been there service is the main issue. Not bad, but not good. The other restaurants in the post I won't comment on because I haven't eaten there. Atlanta has truly become a more "cosmopolitan" city. And with that the true southern style eateries have given way to more trendy type places. In other words you don't see a meat and three openings as much as you see Southwestern, Pacific Rim, Northern/Southern Italian, etc.
