When in Atlanta try any of the Peasant Group restaurants located around the area. They are all excellent...contemporary American cuisine. The location in Roswell (1863 House is the name if memory serves).

Another good place is the Buckhead Diner.
Tonefully yours...

I haven't lived in Atlanta for 15 years and only visit every couple of years.

I agree, I've never had a bad meal or service at one of the Peasant Restaurants. There used to be one downtown, The Peasant Uptown?, there was one at Colony Square, what I'd call Midtown, one at Phipps Plaza (a shopping mall) and the one in Roswell.

Here's a few that are lower price but interesting places: The Varsity, used to have curb service, the greasy onion rings are great and it's a unique place. It's right off the expressway (75/85) near Georgia Tech. It's very cheap. I'm not much of a meat eater or a fast food enthusiast but I'd love to have 2 chili dogs, onion rings, and an Orange drink now. Mary Mac's on Ponce de Leon, near midtown. It's another unique place, with southern food, etc (yes, probably overcooked). You pick from a list of meat, veg, and fill out a little order sheet. Everybody's Pizza (thick crust) and Jagger's Pizza (thinner, square crust) and Athens Pizza (pizza and Greek food), all near Emory University, Everybody's and Jagger's are on N. Decatur Rd. and Athens (which I've heard is now a chain around Atlanta) on Clairmont Rd. near N. Decatur Rd. I really like Eat Your Vegetables in Little Five Points and Shippfeifer (not sure of spelling) on Peachtree (Midtown) for Gyros.

There are probably many more great, interesting places available since I lived there and some of the ones I mentioned might not still be around.

Oh, another, there was a great french restaurant, Petite Auberge, in a shopping center at the corner of Clairmont and something, called Toco Hills. There was a great Deli in Ansley Mall with fresh, very good bagels and bialys (not sure of spelling). Also, a little sandwich shop downtown near Georgia State University, call The Snack Shack, with excellent hot pastrami sandwiches.

Just thought of a place with great seafood, Marra's on Cheshire Bridge Rd. The problem is that I think I looked for it the last time I was in Atlanta and I think it was gone. I'm not sure.

Yes, I tried the Buckhead Diner and liked it.

Check out www.foodcritics.com. Various contributors review non-chain restaurants in the Atlanta area. The bulletin board format allow "food critics" to talk and respond about restaurants that are liked or disliked. The BBS is non-commercial. You might get some ideas about some of the better lesser known restaurants around Atlanta. Corky

If you don't mind being served by mid-town Gays (and I hope you don't), then try "Einstein's" on Juniper between 14th and 10th.

If you're into slumming, go to "Eats" on Ponce de Leon, across from City Hall East (the old Sears building). Wear your nose ring.

If you like regular American tavern food, go to "Houlihan's" in Colony Square (Peachtree, just north of 14th), or to the "Vortex" on Peachtree just north of 10th.

If you want exotic Tai food, go to "Tamarind's" on 14th near the I-75/85 connector.

But if you want the Best Mexican Food in Atlanta (no kiddin'), go to "Nuevo Laredo" on Chattahoochee Industrial, just before it runs into Marietta Street (not open on Sunday and Monday). Order a burrito or a chimichanga and be sure to pour on the fabulous salsa they serve up with chips (free). And order a Margarita, too.

Whatever you do, don't go to "Veni Vidi Vici's" adjoining the IBM tower parking garage on West Peachtree at 14th. The food is very good (can be excellent to outstanding). But you said "not expensive" and the bill there would send you into a Grand Mal seizure

The Vortex is a couple of blocks _south_ of 10th (precise address: 878 Peachtree)

I drive by there from time to time on my way to doctor appointments in Smyrna... :) But that's a long way from Midtown!

As for other suggestions: Shipfeifer(sp?) and R. Thomas a bit up Peachtree from Midtown for Mediterranean and vegetarian fare respectively.

I assume you mean "Thelma's Kitchen". No frills southern/soul food at it's finest.

Dunno.

De-lurking for a minute

Try these:

Mexican - Gringos (IMHO the best authentic mexican restaurant in atlanta. The rest are genuine imitations.)

Indian - Zyka (try the chicken 65, you'll move to Atlanta for this)

Chinese - (Hot Wok - an interesting chinese place. interesting in that 99% of the customers seem to be Indians - the food is awsome too).

Happy eating. Back to lurk mode.
