My personal favorite for a lunch on a sunny afternoon is Osteau Baumaniere, located in Les Baux, south of Avignon. Christian Etienne in Avignon, is acceptable, but not outstantding.

If you can fit a stop in your itinerary, do not miss Restaurant Pic, located in Valence. (Between Lyon and Avignon). The food is wonderful, and the hospitality is incomperable.

The places that I recommended are quite expensive by most standards.

Osteau Baumaniere will probably cost about $80 - $100 per person for food only for a complete meal (appetizer, soup, fish, meat, dessert). Wines can run the bill up much higher. I remember that my first lunch there was close to $500 for two people, but everything considered it was well worth the price for the finest dining experience that I have ever had.

Christian Etienne in Avignon will be about $35 - $50 per person for food only for a complete meal.

Restaurant Pic in Valence will be about $35 - $75, and delivers the best value, if you consider the price of the food only, and neglect the physical surroundings of Osteau Baumaniere in Les Baux. Again, I recommend Pic, very highly.

Hope this helps. If you would like other suggestions in France, I'll share more with you if you give me a specific request.
