I've been down to the Keys twice and both times ate at a place called Papa's (not sure about spelling) on Key West. It's on the main street, but set back and there's a great outdoor patio with a huge banyan tree. The food was really good (incredible swordfish with mango sauce and key lime pie) and the prices were reasonable. I never did read about it in the tourist books, etc., but I'd go out of my way to find it again.

Enjoy!

The Quay in Key Largo is excellent. Upscale casual atmosphere with fabulous food!

When you get to Key West, the only place to eat great fresh seafood is the Half Shell Raw Bar. It is right on the water and the shuck the oysters right there in front of you. Check out Key West on a search engine.

Approx 6 miles from the Publix market in Key west (heading north on Rt. 1 away from Key West) is a very unpretentious restaurant frequented by "Conchs," known as BUBBALOOS.

The menu is unique in that it is a mix of Jamaican and deep southern cooking. Hot "jerk" smoked effects on pork and good seafood. Fantastic fried okra and good collards. It is an offbeat resturaunt that is bypassed by tourists who generally flock to the fancier and costlier downtown eateries. It is a "local" place so it has the ambiance that the locals prefer, which may or may not appeal or be acceptable. Nevertheless, it is an interesting menu. The restaurant is not far from the huge piles of sand or cement. But then again there are zillions of very fine restaurants in Key West.

Holland Holland Holland.....you say "the ONLY place"? You must have been there for a few days. As a native South Floridian, there is no "ONLY" place to eat great seafood in Key West. The fishing boats return every day to suppily many many fine eateries with fresh fish. The Half Shell might have the edge on beer selection, and the view is nice, but no one place has a lock on fresh fish.

In reply to the origional post, Marker 88, located on the Overseas Highway (Gulf Side) at....guess where...mile marker 88, has long been recognized as one of the Key's best.

Without a doubt you are right "Bobalu's" ( Bob & Lucy's) has the best fried conch in the keys.

Your telling me this Keys seafood scenario? Half Shell sells more seafood than anyone else in the keys. When it comes in fresh it comes there.

I ate at Marker 88 on my first trip to the Keys, and it is indeed an excellent restaurant. My big memory, though, was its dress "code". I knew it was reputed to be one of the best in the area, and expensive, so I wore a coat and tie. Imagine my suprise when I realized that, not only did no one else have on a tie, much less a coat, but that I was the only guy in the restaurant with long pants on!! Gotta love the Keys...
