Places off of I84 in CT?

Doing that Boston-NY drive again pretty soon.
Looking for new places to stop for a bite along
the way. We usually stop at Rein's (sp?) in Vernon, (around exit 65) but haven't been too impressed our last few stops.

We've stopped at the Blue Colony Diner down around exit 10, pretty standard diner fare. It's convenient and the food isn't too bad.

We've also stopped at that Food & Books place up
around the Mass border. Decent food with a lot of turkey dishes on the menu.

Any other suggestions? Anything within a mile or two off if I84 would be nice to know about.

Thanks,
-Dan

Reins Delicatessen. Exit 65 in Vernon. One of the best delis around and well known through the NY-Boston route.

Down the block from Reins is Lotus, a very good Vietnamese restaurant. They used to be a couple of miles off the highway but moved and you can actually now see them from the road. A friend who lives in the area loves the place (in fairness she likes Reins as well).

STURBRIDGE MA
Sometime I want to stop in Sturbridge to eat at Old Sturbridge Village's village inn again. It'll take a lot of time to visit the village enough to make the admission fee worth it, but the plain new england cookin is wonderful: brown-gravy turkey pot pie with succotash when I was their years ago. There's probably some good eats in modern Sturbridge for the tourist trade, but I haven't looked.

UNION CT
We're currently regulars of the Travelers Book Restaurant that you mentioned in Union CT at the Mass. border; free book with every meal, three free on Wednesday -- and others available at 25 cents from the free shelves, and others at reasonable used book prices down-stairs.

Having hit Travelers both north and south the last few runs over the Tappan Zee, I can't vouch for the continued existence of the following, but:

VERNON CT
A few blocks south of Reins, I found a nice little Chinese restaurant in a strip-mall. It's the only place where I've seen a great idea: Polaroid pictures of each dish, labeled, in the window as a visual menu. We liked it so well that we took my mother-in-law, who learned to each chickens feet in Peking on travel; she allowed as how it was good enough, which is great in mother-in-law talk. :-) Haven't been in a couple of years, but seem to recall the strip mall was anchored by a pet-salon!

DANBURY CT
Blue Colony Diner (previously mentioned) in Danbury CT had great pastry deserts and good large servings of acceptable plain cookin.

MT KISCO NY
In Mt. Kisco NY there is a gourmet deli called "Two Good Cooks" that we've liked. They don't stay open too late (7ish?), but have scrumptious pate, and in season have cafe tables outside. In winter, you'll get to eat in your car. Downer is they have no restroom.
Across the street is Mt. Kisco "Dinner", which is an up-scale version of Blue Colony: New Orleans Whorehouse decor, but the food was good even if overpriced. (We ate here once when TGC was closed.)

Cheers,

Sturbridge is sadly devoid of good restaurants at reasonable prices (I know I live there). The best choice is the Ugly Duckling Loft above the Whistling Swan restaurant. It is about one mile West of the Sturbridge exit off 84. Great atmosphere and pretty good "pub-style" food. (Note: I wouldn't recommend it for kids.)

I have eaten at the Mt. Kisco "Dinner" many times, but recently have stopped. I finally got tired of the extremely greasy and somewhat overpriced food. Probably it was the "whorehouse" decor and local clientele that attracted me (possibly it was also the full bar). Recommended for one stop if you like this sort of thing.

However, I recently found out that strangely enough Mt. Kisco is a haven for Mexican restaurants. Unfortunately I cannot remember any names just now. There are at least three on the main drag, but the best one is a little way off the drag.

Sorry for the reoccurring theme of Mexican restaurants, even I am beginning to think that "obsessive" might be the right adjective.

I can't remember the name of this place, but I remember it as being at I84 exit 26, the Route 70 Cheshire exit, a little east of Waterbury. Take 70 west (not toward Cheshire) a short distance. I too stumbled on it by accident.

It's the essence of simplicity. You shout out a positive integer ("Two!") and you get that many hot dogs. There are -few- other things on the menu. Closed Fridays.

Well, not off of I84, but right off of I95 in some town in south western CT (maybe Norwalk?) is a place called Swanky Franks that fits that description. It was written up in the book Road Food/Good Food by Jean and Michael Stern. Worth the stop!
