The perfect place for you would be the Ajax Tavern for dinner at the base of Ajax at the back of the Little Nell hotel. Great atmosphere, no fireplace, but creative, solid cuisine with a French accent. 2 with wine will be under $100...

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that Aspen and "not terribly expensive" are almost mutually exclusive but it can be done. Here's a list for you that I have sampled. Feel free to email me if you'd like some more info...

Explore Bistro. 221 E. Main St. Vegetarian bistro with an international bent. Located in a bookstore, also great for dessert.

Little Annie's Eating House. 517 E Hyman. The spanokopita is wonderful. Quite moderate prices.

Pour La France. 413 E. Main St. Obviously french fare. Especially good for lunch and also dessert.

Poppycocks. 609 E Cooper Ave. Breakfast and Lunch. Go here for breakfast. French Toast with pecans, bananas and Grand Marnier sauce. Need I say more.....

The Italian Caviar. 535 Dean St. At the base of Aspen Mountain in the basement of "The Tippler". The calzone is enough for two people or two meals.

Takah Sushi. 420 E. Hyman Ave. Highly recommended. Vegetable curry (nothing like Indian) and spring rolls very good.

Bently's at the Wheeler. 328 E. Hyman Ave. Basic bar food but great beer selection and great historic atmosphere.

And other places that look great but I haven't been to (yet!)

Ajax Tavern. 685 E. Durant Ave. Mediterranean
Mirabella. 216 S. Monarch St. Mediterranean
Angelos. 501 E. Hyman. Italian
Mezzaluna/Half Moon Bakery. 624 E. Cooper. "Global" menu.

That ought to keep you busy for a little while. Email if you have any questions or want some more suggestions.

Enjoy,

Richard Scott
