Blackbeards is wonderful; food is very good and has a great atmosphere. The Chart House is also good; a bit overpriced though good. Both are on St. Thomas. There is a restaurant on the top of a mountain on St. Thomas with a GREAT view and good food, but I can't think of its name. Ask about it, though. Have fun!!!

In St. Thomas, I would recommend two places specifically. One is Sibs on the Mountain, which is up above Charlotte Amalie Harbor and the other is a place that is along the coast from the Harbor, toward St. Johns and was called "For the Birds". Sibs has a great view from up high and "For the Birds" had a great setting along the beach. Hopefully they are both still there.

On St. John's, by far the best view is the restaurant up on top of Bordeaux Mountain. I forget the name, but call since I remember it not being open at some times. The most interesting restaurants are back on the east side into Hurricane Hole and are some of the old Carribean ones. Check the guide books. They beat the ones in Cruz Bay by miles.

The mountaintop restaurant with view is Hotel Mafeolli (sp?). If the weather is warm, you can eat on the open-air patio overlooking Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. A few miles further up the mountain, but without a view of the harbor, is another good place - Sid's or Sib's. You will need a taxi or rental car to get to both these places, as they are 5 or 10 miles from town. Ask about location of the access road to go up the mountain - I believe it's fairly obscure.

I would second the recommendation for Bordeaux. You could get a better meal at any restaurant charging half of that here in Chicago, but for the Caribbean its by far the best.

Also, try to eat at any of the BBQ stands around Cruz Bay. Conch fritter and greenies! Sigh..........

YES! There aren't many restaurants on St. John, and you can't go wrong with most of them. My favorites are Fish Trap, Excellent fresh seafood, Lime Tree, Morgans Mango, both have Island cuisine in a pleasant atmosphere. The restaurant at Caneel Bay is very good but a little more upscale. There is a French restaurant on one of the highest point on the island, Chateau Bordeaux (sp?), I never ate there and I have heard very good and very bad things about it. Good things - good food, great view. Bad things - average food, overpriced. And you also ned to try the local street vendors for conch fritters, jerk chicken, barbecue, etc. If you get tired of island eating and just want a hamburger, there is an excellent restaurant in the Mongoose Junction shopping Mall (mini-mall).

Because of my limited time on ST. Thomas, I can only recommend a few places. On the west end of Charlotte Amalie there is an area called French Point, not to be confused with Frenchman's Reef on the East end. We usually stay at a hotel called Admiral's Inn, and there are several good restaurants in walking distance. Right by the Admirals Inn is one called The Chart House. Excellent food with a great view of the harbor. There are two highly recommended, and expensive French Restaurants in that area, Provence, and Le Bistro. My favorite, however, is a restaurant called Alexander's which is downstairs from one of the expensive French restaurants. I made a faux pas there by complimenting them on their excellent Bavarian cuisine, and was informed that it was Austrian. Six varieties of schnitzel. One of my measures of a good restaurant is to ask for a desert that is not on the menu. There I asked for vanilla ice cream with strawberries. They brought me a vegetable bowl filled with ice cream and "fresh" strawberries. That will be a regular stop from now on.

Happy snorkling.
