You cannot go wrong with Chinese food in Vancouver. There are literally hundreds of them everywhere with news ones cropping up all the time. That is thanks to all the new immigrants from Hong Kong and Taiwan. I used to live there and I mean it when I say that you cannot go wrong. Definitely visit Chinatown (second in size only\ to San Farncisco's) to find good Chinese food.

As for Indian food, try the Punjab Restaurant on Main Street (n- ear Chinatown).

For seafood, try the Raintree or the Teahouse in Stanley Park (definitely worth it!!!).

Bon appetit!

Vancouver:

For Chinese, if you want a really exceptional meal, go to Kirin, in City Square on Cambie St. Everything on the menu is outstanding, particularly the seafood.

I don't think that there is such a thing as good Indian food in Vancouver, but you might try Heaven and Earth curry house on 4th. It's OK, but nothing like Appam in San Francisco.

Seafood? Joe Fortes is a noisy bar+grill that has excellent seafood. If the seafood isn't perfect, send it back. They want to know. You might also try A Kettle of Fish.

Other than that, I had a few favorite treasures when I lived there:

- Delilahs, on Haro St. (hard to find, it's sunk underground in a residential area) is just over the top in terms of reasonably priced, completely excellent dining. This is my favorite restaurant in the
*world*. Arrive early, as there are no reservations and it fills up fast. Take a taxi, as parking is impossible.

- The Bo-Jik vegeterian restaurant on 4th has a very interesting, delightful, otherwordly cuisine. It's Buddhist, but doesn't suffer with the obsession with synthetic "meat" that so many other Buddhist places have. The lighting is atrocious, but the food reminds me of misty Tibetian mountaintops.

- Kitto, downtown on Granville St. is a very fun robata bar. Go for dinner, sit at the bar, and have the robata - if you haven't had it before, it's lots of fun. The non-robata items on the menu are fairly standard, but they do make an unusually good unagi-don.

Victoria:

- Sunday brunch at the Laurel Pt. Inn is very good, with a really enormous selection of stuff. If you are into hotel brunches, this is about the best.

- Tea at the Empress is overpriced and touristy, but you really should do it once. Dress up, they don't allow casual clothes. Get your reservation well in advance.

Places to avoid in Vancouver: Trader Vic's, any restaurant in Stanley Park, certain grungy teahouses in Chinatown (some are excellent, though), and the Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant (on Hastings?) where the food was so bad and the service so rude as to be nightmarish. And don't bother with the place up on Grouse Mountain - make a picnic and drive up to Cypress Bowl, and both the view and the food will be better.
