Just curious. Have any of you "world travellers" been fortunate enough ;-) to travel to our fair city? We do have some excellent restaurants, especially for seafood lovers, and I would be very interested to hear some out of town opinions. My personal favorite seafood place in Vancouver is Joe Forte's. Great atmosphere, very professional service staff and delicious well presenmted meals. Fish & Co in the Hyatt and the Prospect Point Cafe in Stanley Park are also worth the trip. Prospect Point is especially good if you can get a window table. My fave casual place downtown is the Cactus Club Cafe. Milestones on Robson is good too, but the service can be disappointing cause it's busy and it's not the best place for intimate conversation,: it's reaaly LOUD! I discovered The Only Seafood Cafe on my first visit in 1975 and have been back on every occasion that I find myself in Vancouver--even when only long enough to jump on a cruise ship. As someone wrote in a restaurant guide, the place has the "ambiance of a public men's room," but its quirky charm continues, as well as wonderful seafood. I remember when the menu was divided between boiled and fried--no substitution;, there were no beverage offerings but coffee and tea. There was the morning when we arrived before opening to find fish lying on the service counters. After they were removed and stored, the counter was wiped and we were invited to sit down for lunch. Then there was the time our dining neighbor at the counter by the front door ordered the most expensive plate, ate half, and bolted out the door without paying. The Only has even survived being mentioned in a Gourmet Magazine piece on Vancouver. My sole disappointment was when I arrived one time and found a sign on the door: "Closed for Cleaning." Since I live in Seattle, I try to get to Vancouver at least once or twice a year as I think it's a wonderful city. On my last visit I splurged and went to Raintree and thought it was fantastic. The food was great (their spot prawns are out of this world) and the place was very comfortable. I hate fancy restaurants that are pretentious and luckily Raintree did not have that problem. I also love some of the ethnic food in Vancouver, especially the stuff we don't get - like really good Malaysian. I also think the Vietnamese place that has 2 locations, one on Broadway and one in Chinatown is great but I can't think of the name of it. I envy you living in such a food city.
